Question about Nikon D70

Good day to you all. Just a quick question from a newbie. I am seriously
considering purchasing a Nikon D70 SLR digital camera and I currently own a
Nikon F55 SLR Film camera with several nikkor lenses for it. Will the lenses
be compatible with the digital camera? Excuse my ignorance. Thanx in
advance...

If the lenses are autofocus, they will be fully compatible. If not, and
they're not "P" type, they will probably mount (unless they are very special)
but the light meter will not function unless you have a matrix chip installed.
If they're manual focus, if you specify which lenses they are, we can tell you
for sure.

Be aware that you'll get a different field of view on the D70 than
on 35mm, using the same lens. The "crop factor" for that camera
is 1.5, so a 50mm lens will give you the field of view that you'd
expect from a 75mm lens, and so forth.

Welcome to the world of DSLRs. If you have half as much fun as I'm
having, you won't regret your purchase.

And don't forget to upgrade the Firmware to the latest, or you'll be
puzzling over colour space issues.

    That is rather old information. These days, the current
firmware version is 2.00 for both A and B sections. It came out to
bring the D70 firmware up to the same level as the D70s firmware, so any
of the D70s' features which were not dependent on hardware (e.g. the
larger display or the connector for a wired remote) would be available
on the D70 as well.

    To find the current version of the firmware in the D70, select
the wrench icon at the left of the display, then scroll down to the
"Firmware Ver." menu entry.

    My D70, purchased over a year ago, was already just before the
"1.03 B" version, and I upgraded it as soon as the firmware was
released. I'm now up to the 2.00 for both A and B sections.

    So -- anything purchased new *should* already be at the 2.00
version, or at least the 1.03 B. (and 1.02 A). I guess that if it is a
NOS (New Old Stock) camera, it might have earlier firmware. But you can
skip over the 1.03 B version (if necessary) and go directly to 2.00 A&B.

Is it very difficult to get a lens chipped? Do i just send my lens to nikon
and is it very costly?

I have a 28mm PC lens that i use often on my D70, but have to expose and
meter myself.

Nikon doesn't do the upgrade. You can have it done for $115 by this guy:

Note that with a PC lens you'll never be able to meter while shifted, chip
or not.

Any of your D or G series lenses will be fully functional with the
D70.
