Maxxum 5D and new K-M lenses an encouraging sign

At least for us Maxxum types...

I see that the rumored Maxxum 5D has been announced. 6 Mpx is a bit of
a downer, but they retained the A-S (which seems excessive to me if
they want to reach a broader market). The 5d will likely be in my SO's
Xmas stocking and as a backup to my 7D. I'll wait longer on the prices
this time (although I did get the $200 7Drebate without being qualified
for it!)

Looks like a great little package, and being announced along with three
"digital" lenses as well as a new pro "G (D)" 85mm f/1.4 that will be
available around PMA time. This lens is 36x24mm compatible so my
Maxxum 9 and 7xi will be happy.

The 85 f/1.4 has always been on my A- list. I find doing portraits
with the 100 f/2.8 to be a little marginal in my home studio, esp. for
cropped digital shots. The larger aperture

This all indicates that K-M's "high value market" orientation made last
Spring is, as we suspected, aimed at the SLR's, both film and digital.

Now, K-M, how about a 10 Mpix Maxxum 9D with 1.37 crop...

You may be disappointed to learn, then, that the new lens is a 35mm f1.4...

Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I was reading what I wanted to
read!

Of course there already *is* an 85mm "G" (D) f/1.4 lens, so I'm still
in happy land (I'd forgotten about the "D" release some months or a
year or so ago). The 35mm may have appeal for me but not likely ...
I'll leave it on my "B" list.

Looks like it's just an update to the 35mm f1.4 they already make, not a
"new" lens..

You're correct in that the optical formula for the 35mm probably has
not changed. Same for the 85mm, which is my main interest. They've
added the (D) flash integration, which is not of much interest to me as
I manually set my lights.

wrt the 85mm G, a mid 90's design, it is well known as a supperb lens
in all respects. It would be a mistake to mess with the optical
formula in any case.

I'm wondering if they are going to start adding lenses to the formula
that make the light rays come in at a more closely perpendicular
angle, the way Olympus and other mfgs have done?
In fact, adding a negative lens at the back of the group allows great
optical freedom to correct aberrations IF you make the "power" of the
front lens group slightly less than it is now. One of the problems of
super-compact lenses is the restriction they place on this, requiring
higher "magnifications" from each element to produce a certain focal
length in a confined space.

I guess that makes two dreamers - Alan and myself. Actually, I have two
dreams... (not that there's anything wrong with either one)

1. KM produces the aforementioned camera
