Hi, New to this forum.

Question; I want to purchase a Nikon D50 with the 18-70mm kit lens that
comes with the D70. (Why the D50? It feels better in the hand and I
just want the basic functions i.e. SP,AP, etc.. And I'm a proud owner
of a 35yr old manual Pentax)

Problem; No one (trusted retailers) seems to have the lens as a
separate item. They say that all 18-70mm lenses are tied up in the D70
kits.

Solution: Appreciate recommendations as a substitute for the 18-70
Nikor lens (similar cost and quality).

Thank you

There isn't an alternative.
Here (New Zealand) you can buy the D50 as a kit with various lens
options, including the 18-70.
Shop around - the glitch may be that the retailers you have spoken with
have only d50 kits in stock - with the 18-55 lens - meaning if they
split it up, they have to sell the 18-55 separately.

Yep, that's probably also true.

Sounds like a good excuse for this Yank to visit New Zealand :-O  If I
just can convince the wife!

Thanks

It is available separately but hard to find (sometimes).  I bought mine
separately...have
you tried Norman Camera (www.normancamera.com)?  Very often they have hard
to find
items that the NYC stores are sold out of and usually their prices are
comparable.

BTW--I am assuming that you are in the U.S.

Yes, that's it. I love mine. Came with my D70 kit.  Sold the D70 when I got
my D2X, but kept the lens.

I have split one up already, with the 18~55 it sells for $1150cdn, with the
18~70 it woul be $1380cdn. Question why not buy a Pentax *ist DS as it will
take you old lenses as well...

My ex-partner had the same problem. I wanted a D70, so I bought the kit, and
sold him the lens for the diff, which was about US$100 less than if he bought
just the lens. Find someone about to buy a D70, who doesn't want the kit lens
and strike up a deal.

B&H Sells the lens individually for $339 (USA).  It is their catalog number
NI187035GAF.

Buy any Nikkor (or Sigma) D- or G-series lens and you will have a
fully functional set up.

B&H has the lens? Good. However back to page one. K-M just introduced their
Maxxum 5D.
About the same kit price as Canon XT and Nikon D50 and it comes with a
18-70mm lens, AND with image stablization.
Thanks
