Can the SB-600 do anything that the SB-800 can't?

Not to my knowledge.  It's a slightly stripped down version of the 800.

Takes less money from your wallet.

    Hmm ... I don't have an SB-600, only the SB-800, but at a guess,
the SB-600 can probably get more shots out of a set of charged batteries
(assuming the same batteries), as its maximum power is lower.  Of
course, close shots will use less than the maximum power from both, so
unless you are near the edge of the SB-600s range, it probably won't be
noticeable.

The extra electronics might draw more from the batteries in the
SB-800 as well.  However, the SB-800 has a booster battery pack
(supplied stock) so it will use five cells instead of four -- for faster
recycle times.  I don't know whether this can be used with the SB-600,
but it might negate the possible flashes/charge benefit.

I may someday pick up one or two SB-600s to use in combination
with the SB-800 and my D70 camera.

Maybe you'll get answers from somebody who has both -- but other
than the possible flashes/charge issue, I doubt that you will find the
SB-600 capable of doing anything the SB-800 can do -- except perhaps fit
in your budget. :-)

    Enjoy,
        DoN.

The display is a little bit more contrasty and readable. Other than that
the SB-800 does everything the 600 does and much more.

It weighs less so it's less likely to rip the top off the camera.

Ah, so actually the SB-800 can do something the SB-600 can't!  :-)

I'm sure my SB600 is completely capable of doing it the first time any kind
of torque is applied. Others have done it already. I think Nikon charges
$700 for the repair.
