Daylight balanced fill flash is one of the best uses for a flash gun.
Except in the studio or when shooting interiors, daylight balanced
fill flash is about the only time I use a flash gun.
You will probably find that using it on the default auto setting gives
a little too much illumination. Try using flash exposure compensation
to reduce it by 0.3, 0.7 and 1.0 stop and see which you prefer.

For my purposes it worked just fine in default mode. However, for a tight
portrait I can see your point.
