Completely non scientific - and not of practical use, a bit silly,  but
what the heck...
A few weeks ago someone stated in here told me that the old "lens
resolution" test - of taking a photo of a broadsheet newspaper spread
out so that it was two pages wide, then seeing if you could read the
text across the frame was a pointless exercise with _any_ digital
camera, let alone a 6mp one, as they wouldn't be able to resolve
anywhere near that level of detail.

Well, they can - easily - and that was taken using just a "kit" zoom
lens.  It is completely legible across the entire frame.  No - it was
not a "large print" newspaper - it was a full two pages of broadsheet.

To take it a step further, I printed it at 10 x 6.67 inches (300dpi) and
scanned it (at 1200dpi, then scaled it 25%) - which is the middle image
- note that some resolution has been lost in the scanning - it actually
looks crisper using a magnifying glass - small but you can (just) read
it with the naked eye. That printer will apparently resolve down to 10
lpmm. (so, more than you will get from a fuji frontier at 300dpi - but
still just a "consumer" photo printer).  I haven't tried, but I reckon I
could print a 6mp photo of two sheets of newspaper at 7x5 inches or even
less and still read every word.
The approximate size of the actual scanned print (as seen on a 17"
monitor at 1024x768) is at the bottom of the image.

I'm having trouble reading between the lines. Could you do the other
side so I can figure out what it says?

Sorry - it's winter here and I used the paper to light the fire last night.
Anyway, the crop was from a "letter to the editor".  If you're short of
meaningless drivel to read, try one of the *.politics or *.religion
newsgroups :-)

Most sane people consider a 6 MP DSLR the same as a print good low ISO
film, of course that are a lot of people who are not all sane.

I am finding that a lot of people just don't get it that digital
camera have arrived.  Of course you tend to get a distorted view on the
news groups, there seem to be a lot of people here who think film is
doing well.

I have shot news papers from time to time, not as a test but to get a
record on what was on them, I normally do just a page, but when I want
a sense of continuity I will open it up and shoot two pages at once,
very readable.
