Vic, the folk here are digital SLR enthusiasts, you may want to ask in
rec.photo.digital.zlr instead.  I'll cross-post my answer to that group
and set follow-ups there.

I've just sold my 5700, but I recall that the camera will try and focus on
the nearest object in its focus regions.  I used to have the focus region
display set, and if it focussed wrongly simply point the camera slightly
differently and try again.  You can perhaps force the focussing just to be
in the centre region.
