Well, I haven't been here in a few years. Hopefully, the signal-to-
noise ratio has improved.  It's nice to see posts from some familier
people.  I spent the last couple days shooting infrared in 4x5 and 120
and developing in Pyrocat.

Your arrival has just doubled it [the signal].  Been rather
quiet around here.

Hi Nick,

Yeah, I hadn't looked at the dates of posts.  It's not quite the same
as the early to mid 90s.

I feel bad about the brouhaha about your enlarging timer on APUG.  It
looks like a great piece of kit. I'd get one, but I've been using a
different f-stop timer for years, and I really can't justify getting
another one. I hope that it's selling well for you.  F-stop timing is
really the way to go.

Traffic in all the photography lists have fallen off. I
think part of it is the move to digital photography but much
must also be due to web based forums and private mailing
lists. Also, I think a lot of people who are relatively new
to the internet don't know about Usenet groups. My ISP
(Earthlink) definitely treats them as an afterthought.
I still read the large-format and darkroom groups but
don't often post any more. A few of the old timers are still
here but the groups are really in a rather sorry state.

I think another reason is the increase in flamers and spammers who
discourage others from participating much.

That doesn't seem to have happened so much on the large
format and darkroom groups but I have seen other groups
destroyed by a single person. Unfortunately, many ISP's just
don't bother with abuse complaints.

Correction: *most* ISPs will do *nothing* about any complaints.
(Sometimes rightly, sometimes cravenly: after all, there still is this
thing called "freedom of speech", at least theoretically ...)

Any system of knowledge that is capable of listing films in order
of use of the word "f.ck" is incapable of writing a good summary
and analysis of the Philippine-American War. And vice-versa.
This is an inviolable rule.
