The head on this medium format enlarger I've acquired won't keep its
position with the fastening bolt and is impossible to raise without
pushing it up with all your might. I can't help but imagine there must
be some counter-weight or spring system missing. Does anybody have an
idea how to fix this?

I'd check for any hardware attachment points minus the hardware.
My Omega B8 has a spring coil at top, the band of which engages
the carriage to pull upward. Dan

Most Durst enlargers (the ones I've used anyway) also use a
wide flat spring to counterbalance the head.  On my M601 the
coil housing is in the carriage.  The spring attaches to the
top of the column on the back side with a couple of screws.

Thanks, this is certainly the problem I have. I'll look out for the
part.
