Hi, I'm looking for a film to substitute Kodak Technical Pan. I'm
thinking about Rollei Pan 25, even if it is quite difficult to be found
in Italy. What do you think about this film compared with Tech Pan?
Thanks all

I can't comment on the Rollei 25 film but I have had good
results using 100T-Max processed in full strength Ilford
Perceptol (Microdol-X is identical). In comparison to old
negatives on Tech Pan processed in Technidol the grain is
similar. The advantage over films like Tech Pan and Rollei
25, which are essentially very high contrast films, is that
the effective speed is greater and contrast control easy.
I've been using the T-Max at around ISO-50. For my enlarger
I find cutting back development about 15% gives me about the
right contrast for most subjects.
Perceptol and Microdol-X are extra-fine-grain developers
which employ sodium chloride (table salt) as the fine grain
agent. When used full strength they deliver finer grain than
other developers but loose about 3/4 stop of speed. At 1:3
dilution they deliver normal speed, a strong acutance
(sharpness) enhancement, but loose their extra fine grain
property. The grain when diluted is about the same as D-76.
The new Rollei film has been discussed in both Rolleiflex
Users mailing lists but I have not heard anything definite
yet. It appears to be microfilm or copy film adapted to
pictorial use by use of a very low contrast developer.

Richard, first of all merry Christmas to you and to all group users.
Then, I've looked for "Rolleiflex Users" group inside Google's groups,
but I've not found it. Do you mean "Medium-format equipment" group?

I'm sure he meant either

or

Correct. These were originally a single list but it split
some time ago. Its a good idea to join both lists.

Technical Pan, the latter needs special low contrast developers t
match the contrast of regular general use films

Join the quest for the Holy Grail.  So far no replacement
has been found.

The current great white hope is a rumored 'Delta 25' from
Ilford.

I'd settle for a re-issue of Panatomic-X.

Never heard about Delta 25.. Hope it's a good new for 2007. Instead, it
seems Rollei made a new b/w invertible film instead of Scala, that can
be treated at home with common developers. Wait and see! Happy 2007 to
all of you!

Simon Galley, an Ilford employee who posts regularly on APUG
(http://www.apug.org), has said that Ilford is investigating the
possibility of producing a Delta 25 film. IIRC, a decision about whether
or not to produce it is expected in February. If it gets a "go," it won't
appear immediately -- my impression is that Ilford doesn't really have a
working, commercially produceable emulsion at this moment, so there's R&D
lead time, manufacturing setup time, and distribution time before it could
appear on store shelves. I can't see this taking less than a few months,
and quite possibly over a year, but I'm not an expert, so take this (wide)
estimate with a grain of salt.

Of course, it's also quite possible that Ilford will decide not to proceed
with the project.

If you want more information, head on over to APUG and do a search on
"Delta 25." That should turn up several threads in which it's discussed.

If you leave out the aspect of sensitizing towards "the red", Spur
Orthopan is a decent alternative. It´s cheap and judging from what I
have seen on print it´s very decent. But it´s 35mm only.

Gruss,
