I have a Vivitar enlarger lens, a little dusty but probably usable,
that says the following around the top: Anastigmat 1:3.5 F=75mm No.
77498. f-stops range from 3.5 to 16. Does anyone know how to find out
the value/condition of this lens? I am not well-versed in photographic
equipment or how to tell its condition. Thanks.

Vivitar enlarging lenses were some of the worst available.  The
typically appropriate thing to do when an enlarger with a
Vivitar lens was acquired was to find an El Nikkor, Schnieder,
or Rodenstock lense, and throw the Vivitar in the trash.

Some people made the mistake of putting them on a shelf...

Not all Vivitar enlarging lenses were dogs.  I have a very old (30
years +-) 80mm f5.6 VHE which is very good.  No, it doesn't come
anywhere close to an Apo Rodagon, but it can give my old El Nikkor a
run for its money.  When it originally came out, it tested high to the
surprise of many of the reviewers.  It was made by Schneider and from what
I can determine is (or was) a Componon clone -- 6 elements in 4 groups.

That Anastigmat the OP has is probably a 3 element.  Probably from the
60's.  Not worth anything really.

I was told the VHEs were from Rodenstock... either way, the 50mm f/2.8
I had was quite good. These lenses were rather large as I recall and
prominently marked - unlikely to be what the OP has. It's likely the
Vivitar "kit" lens and I agree it's somewhat below worthless.

You were told wrong. The 80 5.6 was a Componon from the old Schneider
factory a few years before their bankruptcy.

I think Bob means Schneider made the lens for Vivitar, just before
Vivitar went  Bankrupt. (I could be wrong)

You are wrong Schneider went bankrupt. That was how they downsized. When
they came back as one of Heinrich Mandermann's companies Isco was gone
as well as all of those cheap projector and movie lenses.

So far, $350 worth of time has been spent discussing a Coke bottle.

Yer time is pretty cheap, fkwit.

So, rant on about those fuzzy Foctars. Better, SHOW US THE RESULTS of those
tiredass old lenses.

Parkinson's kicking JJSSS (read as another alcohol induced stupper- at
the gay resort U and U resides)?  Maybe that's why civility seems to
bypass you at both at every roadside assistance call,.... mostly unless
you, U and Davie Boy need some help with a current petting project.

& twut exactly is a "fkwit" ? ( something recalled from your
genuflecting company fighting with a mirror).

One mans junk is another man jewel. I never thought anyone would want
a camera like the  Diana but evidently there is still a market for
them.

Given the great number of certified good lenses from folks like Schneider
and Rodenstock that one  can find dirt cheap, the Vivitar is virtually
worthless except to an uninformed buyer.

As everyone else here has said, it's not worth much.

Even so, you might try selling it on eBay if you are set up to do so. I
sold a cheap enlarging lens like it (a Voss) not too long ago for enough
to make it worthwhile. Be sure to write an honest description of the
lens and don't try to hype it, and put a really low starting bid on it.

You can also check eBay to see what similar lenses have sold for recently.
Do a search, say on "vivitar 75mm enlarger lens." Then look for a
check-box marked "completed listings," check it, and then click "Show
Items." In this case, the result shows three listings: Two sold for $8.99
and $10.50, while a third didn't sell at all. It seems that all three of
them were new old stock (NOS). I have no idea if they were the same model
the OP has. If so, I'd guess that $10 is the most he'd be likely to get
for it, and probably less -- maybe $5 would be a more likely final price.
