anyone scan 4x5 negs?

with a sub-$500.00 scanner that is. i have heard things about the epson
4990, canon 9950, and a minolta too. i need decent results. i know drum
scanning is the best way, but does anyone get respectable (examples???)
results?

I've been impressed by the 4990 and 4x5.

Yes.  I've used a Microtek (Artixscan) 2500 and presently
an Epson 4990.  The Microtek was sharper, but had other
issues and I no longer own it.  The Epson, as far as I can tell,
delivers an "honest" 2000 dpi or so.

I scan my 4x5 stuff at 2400 spi on the Epson.  That gives me
110 million pixels, and from that I can make 24x30" prints
that are tack-sharp, corner-to-corner.

"Respectable" is in the eye of the beholder.
