Is the spelling correct? Agfa made a fine grain developer called
Atomal. I never used any. so can't comment on its qualities. It used a
proprietary developing agent. I believe Calbe may have a clone of it on
the market.

They do, A49.

Adox Adomal 49
Probably just relabeled by Adox Agfa Atomal or (more likely) it's ORWO/Calbe
formula - A-49.
If this indeed is Atomal or A-49 (there were minor differences in formulas)
it is a fine-grain developer which somewhat decreases usable speed, produces
fine, but "soapy", not too sharp grain, giving similar effect to that of
Ilford Perceptol. It was OK with older films (back in the day - ORWO NP 20,
Agfapan 100 - pre-APX emulsions, etc) but it was a lousy developer for
high-speed emulsions (ASA 400 and up.) Adox 400 - according to
digitaltruth - is supposed to be HP5+ so Atomal may not be the best choice
for that film.
