I think Freestyle is selling a liquid paper developer that they claim
produced cooler, more neutral tones than Dektol. Does anyone have any idea
what it is?

I have no idea what they use, but with some papers, D-72 with benzotriazole
instead of KBr seems cooler to me.

I assume you are speaking of image tone, and not status. ;-)

...that would have been "totally cooler than Dektol."

Totally :-)

Seriously though perhaps Edwal, I know that Ultra
Black with certain papers is quite cool, and it "IS" liquid.

Speak and you shall be heard:

I was actually perusingAnchell's D.R.C.B looking for formula
that might match the op's question,...Muir's Blue Black is a phenidone
based developer.

as written-

Water=24oz@125 F
Sodium Sulfite anhydrous=6oz
Hydroquinone=1oz +336 grains 0r 53g
Phenidone=32 grains or 2.2 g
Benzotriazole=22 grains or 1.5 g

Let cool to 75F then slowly add

Sodium Hydroxide 1oz +73grains or 35g

Top off to make 32 with water.

Diluted 1:5 with water
or 1:10-15 for less dramatic Blue.
Develop for 2 minutes.

I made several extensive attempts to contact him after his "Maximum
Monochrome" stopped being published. I'm not totally certain but I
connected with a family member who wouldn't exactly tell me where he was
but I got the feeling that he's something of a snowbird and had left for a
warmer climates. Omaha gets a little cool in the winter. Unfortunately he
never returned any of my calls or emails. I was hoping to help him setup a
domain to promote his newsletter which I found very interesting.

This thread may be of some interest on Cooltone & Warmtone print developers.
