Wavefront Coded Imaging:

By manipulating the digital data from a system equipped with a lens
more suited to a Diana - in which everything is uniformly fuzzy -
depth of field can be dramatically increased.

From

www.cdm-optics.com/wave/pubs/Applications%20of%20Wavefront%20Coded%20Imaging.pdf

"Wavefront coded imaging systems typically consist of a
digital detector, conventional optics retrofitted with
an optical element which has a surface which is non-spherical
  and circular asymmetric."

The new system is described starting Page 6.

Google for "waverfront coded imaging" for more.

Digital imaging is going to get a whole lot more interesting.
How long until a consumer version appears?
