I killfiled Scapitti and lately unkilled Uranium Committee to see
whether the troll had stopped harassing a multitude of newsgroups
(namely, every single populated photography newsgroup).

Apparently he/she has been harassing newsgroups for about three years.
Seems like this person is relatively tame in the tennis groups but
somewhere along the line lost his/her mind in 2002.  There are tame
messages to be found from this person on photo groups.

Some of you may know this, some may not but, Uranium Committee's posts:

Injection-Info: g14g2000cwa.googlegroups.com;
posting-host=216.23.119.186;

resolves to nw.nuvox.net

Michael Scarpitti on rec.sports.tennis where he harassed the
you-know-what out of that group years before he\she attacked the photo
groups.

NNTP-Posting-Host: 216.23.119.186

Scarpitti's Posts from as early as 1999 (maybe earlier) on
rec.sports.tennis:

66.148.175.14.nw.nuvox.net [66.148.175.14]

in otherwords, same person.  (maybe everyone knows this, again).

Scarpitti vascillated between names for a while and seems to have stuck
to Uranium Committee on September 11, 2004 for good.

Nuvox is in Greenville, SC and has been apparently allowing this person
to post (at first with his/her own news server) and then with their
news server for at least 6 years.

The ISP has been notified with a wealth of "examples" and proof of some
of the more harassing messages...

No threats going on here, just trying to stop this if possible.

p.s. Thanks Google!

p.p.s. no need to reply..just informational. :)

Cheers,
sd

Apparently you define helping people and trying to set the facts
straight as 'harassment'.

The trouble is, a lot of what is posted is wrong and needs to be
corrected.

Ah, the smell of freshly minted gas. Scarpathetic won't leave USENET--it
is the only place unmoderated. You will notice the liar has been booted
from everywhere else. Where else can a troll snag unsuspecting newbies?
Let the defecant roar, the killfile is an effective toilet paper...

Erwin Puts writes:

"The battlefield of truth

Robert McHenry, a former editor of the Encyclopaedia Britannica,
remarked recently that the notion that the internet with its abundance
of information should be the last democratic market for ideas, is an
illusion. The internet is indeed a marketplace for information, but it
is often impossible to distinguish between fact and disinformation. Any
opinion counts as equally valid. A cursory visit to any one of the
Leica newsgroups will prove this point: opinions are free, but there is
no competition between ideas and opinions for truth and fact-finding.
Non-solid opinions and untrue facts abound because there is no
mechanism for competition between true and untrue facts. When opinions
clash or facts are unpleasant, people will shield themselves from the
truth by starting a new group with believers or cling to their beliefs
by disregarding anything that will contradict their views. Discussion
groups become easily battlefields of ideologies. They should behave as
platforms for competing ideas, where the love for truth and facts (the
original meaning of philosophy) would guide the discourse. In reality
most internet groups, discussion forums, websites and blogs are heavens
of disinformation, supported by the common human characteristic that we
all want to believe what we already know: changing your view is
emotionally painful."

After a short amount of time with nobody resonding to his trolls he
all but stopped posting. He pops up again with the occasional troll but
they're easily ignored. Just ignore him and he'll go away.

There are places in the world where the indigenous people believe that to
mention the name of a devil will summon him so let's not refer to "he who
must remain nameless" anymore!  Why take any chances?

Put him back in the killfile.  Who cares about Scarpeepee?
Frank Pittel - 19 Mar 2005 05:12 GMT
The troll in question is acting out to get attention. What type of attention
he gets isn't important. The best way to get rid of it is to simply ignore him.
