I just bought a selection of b&w paper from B&H. I want to run some
comparison tests, so I got 25 sheet packs of every 8x10 fiber paper
they carry.
I was a bit dismayed to get two packs of very short dated paper (agfa,
two weeks to go) and a pack of Luminos whose printing had practically
been worn smooth and with visibly curling paper through the wrapper.
Anyway, I have yet to test it, but I am sure some of it will be sub
par. Most Mfgrs don't date their paper, but will they stand behind
their product?
Is this something I have to take up with the retailer?
I once got burned with five boxes of outdated/ poorly stored Bergger
paper. $250. down the drain. I still have the paper and it is utterly
useless, no Dmax, but reasonable whites.
Also from B&H two 50 sheet boxes of 16x20 Forte, that were just gray
from day one.
Any suggestions on how to avoid or remedy this? I assumed B&H would
have a big turnover of stock, and about half of my order was fresh, but
the rest was not.
I am following up this order with one for Liquid Orthazite. Ouch grrr.

I'm not following you here. One assumes you're talking
about fogged paper. If so, it is the whites that should
be grayed/most affected.

True, that is usually the case. Although some papers lose their ability
to produce Dmax with age. I can't find that reference at the moment,
but will post it when I do.

I'll check them out. B&H is so close, it's a habit I guess.

Most manufacturers do date the paper, the emulsion number is usually
some form of the date it was created. Most B&W paper to be really bad
has to be over 5 years old or drastically improperly stored. I would
contact the maker direct and see if they will "warrant the paper from
B&H's sale date" First find out from them if the paper is dated within 5
years. B&H will take the paper back if you stress the issue. Try talking
to "Sal" in the returns department if all else fails.

Thanks Gregory, I'll check that code and the mfgr's policy. Aslo thanks
for the tip about "Sal".
