Hi all !
Yesterday, after almost 25 years pause, I tried to make
my own prints at home. Although I managed to make some
decent photos, I got a problem - exposure time seems to be
too short. With lens closed down to 8 - 11 ( and for MF down
to 16 ) exposure time is 6 - 8 sec. Is it normal with modern
papers ? I'm using Agfa multicontrast ( without filters this time )
and Agfa Brovira Speed grade 3. My enlarger is Meopta
( condenser ), lens are Nikkor 2,8 / 50 for 35mm and
Anaret 4 / 105 for MF. Developer is Neutol Liquid NE 1 + 7.
Thank in advance,

If you put a filter on, that will double or quadruple the exposure time,
depending on the filter. That sounds about right to me.

I do split filter printing with Agfa MCC fiber-base, using a Beseler
Dichro colorhead, and my normal printing times (for an 11X14 print from
a 6X6 or 6X7 negative) are usually in the 10 sec at full magenta and 10
seconds at full yellow range. Or 12 sec. M and 8 sec. Y if I want it
more contrasty. But something in the 20 second range with the lens at
f11 is about right for Agfa. Multicontrast paper is not meant to be
printed with no filtration. It works better with filters.

Variable contrast paper should be used with VC filters.
The speed with filters up to grade 4-1/2 is half that of the
paper without a filter and for higher contrast filters about
half that. Agfa Brovira RC is also pretty fast paper.
However, the exposure times you are getting are pretty short
even for the no filter condition. It would help to know how
large the prints are and how large a bulb is in the
enlarger. For prints of 8x10 or larger, and with a typical
75 watt lamp exposures should run between 15 and 30 seconds
at the stops you use.

Thanks a lot to all !
Richard, my Meopta Standard 2 has no filter drawer, so
I will use graded paper for the moment...
Brovira RC Speed takes 6 - 12 sec at f8, prints are 7 x 9 1/2
The lamp is 150W, which is "standard" for this enlarger.
So I understand that changing lamp to 75W I will get times
you are talking about ( 15 - 30 sec )....
Once more thanks,
Best regards,

Below the lens filters work fine if kept clean. Variable
contast paper is a great convenience. Also, its getting
harder to find graded paper especially in extreme grades.
