Excuse my unwashed ignorance on this,...but.

How different is Perl from PhP? And what would be the advantages of
learning one versus the other?

    Perl is used to design programs and PHP is a web-programming
language. PHP is commonly used as a "knitting" language in that it
knits together components for display as a web page. Perl is more like
.NET in that it is used to write applications that work _directly_
with databases.
