ok my thermometer just broke.
it stays way above 30c to the other end of the stick
and it wont go down no matter what
its a patterson one, with blue liquid inside,
i can see some air bubbles along the gague that
could be blocking the path, theres also an air bubble in the bottom,
is this normal to have air bubbles?
is it kaput?

Try giving it an old fashioned shake. Grab the warm temperature end of
the thermometer, slowly raise you arm high, then quickly bring your arm
down, the idea that it will force the liquid to the cold end of the
thermometer, repeat 4 or 5 times. Make sure you have a very firm grip,
on the glass, there should be no air bubbles in the liquid. Make sure
you store the thermometer with the warm temperture end up, never upside
down or on it's side for more then a minute or two.

No!

You can probably fix it by waggling it from the top end, to force the
bubbles out of the bottom end. If you can do that, it should fix the
problem.

Actually, the way to fix "bubbles" or separation of the
liquid is to carefully heat it until the rising liquid/
temp. eliminates all bubbles and you have a solid line
again.
Whether the guy's thermom is broke I couldn't say. I
don't use Patterson (i.e., cheap) thermometers.
