nov1804 from Lloyd Erlick,

I came across this the other day.
--le

from “The New Yorker” magazine, Nov 1, 2004 issue (this
quote contained in an advertisement by Saks Fifth
Avenue):

Richard Avedon, 1923-2004:

"I’ve worked out a series of no’s. No to exquisite
light, no to apparent compositions, no to the seduction
of poses or narrative. And all these no’s force me to
the “yes.” I have a white background. I have the person
I’m interested in and the thing that happens between
us."

That pretty much tells the whole story.  I'm sorry but I like making ordinary people
look beautiful rather than making extraordinary people look ugly.

Art isn't always pretty, and _some_ people are just
plain ugly...

Sorry, I had to say it. Most "extraordinary" people
simply get a good make up artist. Avedon stripped
all the glamor BS away.

When your work comes under the public discourse of photographic art, you can
make a statement, too. Do that.

Who gives a sh.t what Avedon thought?

Avedon pioneered the use of soft-box light for black-and-white, an
unmitigated disaster.

Look at this crap:
