This is not, strictly speaking, a darkroom question, but I'm not sure where
else to turn for help. I mount my prints on 4-ply, archival board, and own
some other photographers' prints mounted the same way. Winters where I live
are humid, and some of the older boards are starting to display patches of
what I presume is mildew (light brown) over their entire surfaces. Some
seems to wipe off with relative ease, but since the board is porous it's
hard to totally remove the stains. Is there any way to safely clean the
mount boards and save the prints? Thanks for any help!

Do a google search on "foxing" of paper or books and see what treatments
they suggest.
You might also trim the mount at the edge of the print and remount the
trimmed print to a new mat. You could also try foamcore in the future.
Best bet is to store you prints with plenty of air circulation and a
dehumidifier running.

I won't address the cleaning of damaged mount boards, but you could try a
fungicide like Thymol (Photographer's Formulary) that may prevent a
recurrence. Mat boards are tolerant to light applications of solutions
applied with a wrung-out sponge. The dampness raises the "tooth" of the mat
board a bit, but I've never damaged one by doing it.

What would happen if the boards would "immersed" in some cornmeal or
(clean!) kitty-litter in a sealed container for a period of time? Perhaps
one of these (or similar) products would absorb enough moisture from the
mountboard that the mildew could be easily brushed off.

The best thing is to get the prints off the boards and
toss the boards. Getting rid of fungus is quite difficult. I
suggest going over the material at the Conservation On Line
site at http://palimpsest.stanford.edu There is guite a
bit on fungus and how to get rid of it there.
