I rarely shoot B & W, but have always liked it with a lot of contrast.
However recent experience is that the results are awful. They are just
a boring pale grey, Years ago they use to come back contrasty and look
great.

Dude. Build a darkroom. Or buy a scanner and an Epson 2200 printer. If
you really love photography you'll have to do your printing yourself.
You'll never be in control of the finished product if you leave it in
the hands of others. Don't expect anyone else to share your passion.

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere (like me), you should be able
to find a good local lab by doing some phone book and web research.
You don't provide too much more information to go much
further..Questions like "Who is they?" come to mind. Also, maybe you
should ask them how things have changed if "they" are the same people
that make your results looks good.
