Magnifax 4 negative carrier

Would someone mind explaining how the negatives are meant to be placed
in the Magnifax 4 enlarger?

The carrier has two pieces of glass, a clear one at the bottom and a
diffused piece at the top.

The negative holders are two pieces of metal each with an aperture
about the size of the film (although the one which should go over the
top has a slightly larger aperture).

It seems that I need to remove the glass in order to fit the negative
holder. If so, I can't see the point of having the glass in the first
place. I thought the glass would hold the negative flat to ensure a
sharp print.

I'd appreciate any advice and clarification about this as it seems a
little confusing at the moment.

The glass carrier is better for keeping the negative really flat, but
attracts a lot of dust, so it has to be cleaned constantly; the
glassless carrier does not keep the negative as flat as the glass, so
sharpness might be compromised, esp. with larger negative sizes, but
there is no danger of dust (except on the neg. itself);
good compromise: metal mask on the bottom (-> 2 surfaces less that
could attract dust), AN glass (the one that looks frosted) on the top
(neg's usually bow upwards, so the glass on top will be sufficient for
pressing the neg. flat).
