apr704 from Lloyd Erlick,

I came across a chemical supplier website (url below) - and they list
glycin under its chemical name and CAS number-- note the availablitiy
of a lower grade for lower price ...

[I notice that a recent thead in this ng discussing glycin contained a
posting that the following is the correct formula for glycin:
N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-glycine, CAS 122-87-2. I don't know if this is the
same substance, but the numbner is the same.]

Photographers Formulary list Glycin at $16.50 for 100 grams.  It's not a
hazardous material and can be shipped anywhere.

Not sure why this stuff cost over 13 times the stuff from the Formulary. Am
I missing something in this message?

I was surprised to find another source out there at all. Too bad it's
way more expensive...

Here in Germany, there's a mail order house that will sell you 25 grams of
Glycin for Euro 21.95 - that's US $28.00!  Pyro goes for the equivalent of
US $35.00 for 25 grams.  Imagine how many users of Pyro there are here when
a half liter of the stock 'A' solution would cost you almost $50.00 to
make!!!

I order what I can from the Formulary and what they can't ship, I try
ArtCraft (they'll ship Pyro and hydroquinone).

Tis a crazy world in which we live...

Maybe Canada is less stringent re shipping.
I believe Johnny will also ship almost anything

I think he realizes that if you play by the rules you will
never get ahead. Just as did Kennedy, Vanderbilt, Trump and many
others.

Jim you don't have to by pyro from the most expensive source, there
are good alternatives if you are in germany (with the sole exception
of glycin where the formulary seems to be last who make and offer it
in affordable photo-grade):

http://www.genec.de/pch1-2004br.htm Pyrogallol, ultra pure, 25g, EUR
14,29

http://www.omikron-online.de/cyberchem/preise/prs-html/016pl-py.htm
Pyrogallol pure, 100g EUR 39,80

Both are probably cheaper when ordered locally. The above sources also
ship hydroquinone for reasonable prices.

Rayco in the UK sell it.  From their website:

     GLYCIN (g)
    38.06
    60.91

Prices are in UK pounds, ($1 was 0.58 pounds when I got some to take with me
to the USA last week) the first price is for 5g, the second for 25g.  I
don't know why it is so expensive.

>glycin for $66

may104 from Lloyd Erlick,

their page shows the following:

Glycine, Reagent, A.C.S.
100g
G325Q2
$17.60

500g
G325W2
$66.00

We get back into the old glycine vs glycin muddle.
There is also the glycin packaged for use in the
fur dressing and dying industry. I have tried it
on prints and it is not pretty.

Who will step up to the plate and spring for the
100 grams to test it out? I, for one, will send
two bucks to support the cause ...

> We get back into the old glycine Vs glycin muddle.

There are two glycin(e)s: one a simple amino acid, cheap
and common as snot (buy a bag of corn...); the other is
'photographic', having a ring structure with all sorts
of hangers on attached to the amino acid glycin(e).

Either can be spelled with or without the final 'e'.  In the
US the 'glycine' usually (but not always) indicates the
amino acid and 'glycin' the developing agent. In TROTW
(like, not in the US) both forms are spelled 'glycin'
(sometimes) with the developing agent identified as
'photographic glycin(e)'.

If it is cheap it is probably the wrong glycin(e).

The Bryant labs stuff is listed under photographic chemicals,
so one has to assume it is the developing agent.  If it turns
out to be corn extract there would be excellent grounds for
returning the stuff.

I don't understand selling 'reagent grade' for photography.
Photo grade is usually somewhere between 'technical' and
'floor sweepings', often a fraction of the cost of
reagent grade.

I think the safest way would be to email (they do have one?) the seller
and ask.
