What are the do's and don'ts for clearning a glass negative carrier?
What clearers and matteral do the best job and the least amount of harm?

Alan,

I use ROR diluted 1:3 with distilled water. I dilute it for
conservation. I would imagine you could use almost any glass cleaner in the
same fashion. When I bought my last bottle of ROR, I drew 1 oz (give or
take) and put it into another 4 oz spray bottle and filled with distilled
water.

When I clean my carrier, I spray the cleaner in the air and wave the
carrier through the mist. This deposits a smaller amount than direct
spraying ever can and also prevents it from getting under the edge of the
glass. If you try to spray a small amount from most of those pump type
sprayers, you end up with drops of cleaner and not a mist.

I wipe with a piece of standard paper towel (I use Bounty brand). I have
to go after the dust any way, so it really doesn't matter (IMHO) if I add
dust while wiping.

When I was at college the computer system would often

Lucky you. My first compiler used to say "What? Me worry?" and print an ASCII
picture of Alfred E. Newman.

Language was MAD on a 1410 with a 1401 pre-processor. State of the art at the
time. No tubes any more, just discrete transistors.

You can use isopropyl alcohol, but not from the common pint bottles sold for
household use. You need to use pharmaceutical grade (ask at your
pharmacy) - the lesser stuff is only 70% alcohol and leaves a residue.

You can also check the Yellow Pages for laboratory supply companies. If you
have one nearby, check for something like Absorbond wipes by Texwipes.
These are all mechanically-bound polyester fiber pads - no chemical binders
so no residues, and lintless. Others are available, too.

Windex and lint free paper wipes (available from photo shops).
You might also try a microfiber cloth used for cleaning lenses.
It cleans without liquids.
