Bloody magpies - Aussie for a collector of all things useless

When Magpies build their nests it's not unusual to find it made from
human items they found  laying around. Thus it is said by true blue
Aussies that a collector or horder of 'stuff' is a "Bloody Magpie"

Native Australian birds, Protected by law, they often develop a
relationship with humans who feed them and attack those who don't. A bit
like trolls, I imagine.

Nice shot.  You ought to be posting full size 1024 x 768 images.  These
little teasers just don't cut it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Should" but I'll do that just for you
sweety! Try the link again now.

Er... 1024 pixels wide only comes out to 683 high of an uncropped image.
You do realise almost never crop my pictures, don't you?

Old habits die hard. I prefer composing the shot in the viewfinder. I
use Photoshop to "save for web" but I might start using a different
program for it soon. Sammy wants the laptop (with Photoshop on it) back.

I didn't realise how much stuff I have on board that belongs to her now!

Perhaps it is just a temporary isp/name server issue but that link, and
indeed your entire site, isn't loading right now (10:45am local time)..
(overwhelmed by keen visitors perhaps, or did you forget to pay your
bills?)

Just out of interest I pinged it, (and then Google to be sure it wasn't
me..) and here's the result.

Thank heavens!!, whatever the problem was has now been resolved, so you
can ignore the above post.

It loaded instantly for me a few minutes ago at about 8:45 PM
(Tuesday) local time.

Just now clicked it again and no problem.

Did you forget to pay your ISP?

Actually Tony It's a server farm where all 128 of the sites I manage are
hosted. Every so often switching for load sharing happens and for the
blink of an eye, the sites are error 404. I don't think that happened
today, I've been uploading data to them for a few hours.

I am more likely to blame your ISP for not polling their DNS more
frequently. The IP address of my site changed earlier today 4:00AM GMT +
10 hours. DNS updates should be no worse than 15 minutes apart but many
ISPs try and be smart and do it nightly or worse, weekly.

The account is direct debited to my bank account and paid yearly. Troll
being what they are think they'll start a fight by suggesting I'm like
them - living from day to day on hand outs from the Government.  In Aus
it's called Dole bludging.

I clicked to your site without a problem.  It is Mark, not me, who
allegedly has a problem.

I'm in the process of banning his ISP's entire IP range from access to
my site. He's on my black list so I can't see his posts only yours.

Why'dya cut out the ping result from Google?  Umm, I think if I hadn't
paid my bills, that would have stopped me getting a ping from other
sites too..!

As I said above, it has come back online now so it was obviously
something temporary.  Phew!!

Because I really don't give a rat's a.s why you decided to insinuate
he doesn't pay his bills when there was no problem.

Good-oh.  We've established that you didn't think it was funny (or not
when *I* said it..) and that you respond by doing exactly what I did,
presumably thinking that two 'wrongs' make a right.  Fine by me!

If it was me, I'd *want* to know if my site was down (and Douglas has
now given an indication that it probably did disappear), for one of two
reasons, and that the problem wasn't at my end, as indeed it clearly
wasn't when you first posted..

Finally, I'm puzzled as to why you didn't give a rat's a.s but posted
anyway.

But whatever.  Everyone's happy now, right!

I agree that he'd want to know if his site was down.  That's why I
checked and mentioned that it wasn't.  The part I don't give a rat's
a.s about is why you decided to change a helpful post into a dig.

And it *was*, as was proven by my pings - even Douglas himself accepted
there was probably a brief dns propagation problem.

> That's why I checked and mentioned that it wasn't.

The thing that is missing here is that it wasn't WHEN YOU CHECKED.  So
because you rechecked, you assume it was up continuously?  Sheeeeesh.

You'll notice that I rechecked shortly after, and immediately posted
that it was back up when it returned about 6 minutes after my first post.

> The part I don't give a rat's

Let's just clarify that too - I *actually* said this:

".. overwhelmed by keen visitors perhaps, or did you forget to pay your
bills?"

YOU changed that into "..insinuate that he doesn't pay his bills".

Do you really think that is the same as asking someone, quite nicely
(try reading my words in a pleasant voice..) if they *forgot*?

Now I dunno about you, but I do forget the odd bill.  And if someone saw
my site was down, I would have no problem whatsoever if they asked if I
forgot to pay the bill.  Had I have said "You obviously can't afford
it", or "you must be unemployed", then Douglas could have been
justifiably miffed.

(But wait, Douglas *does* say that sort of thing - so perhaps I should
have...)

Only a loser like you would get announce he has someone killfiled then
reply to them via someone else's post.

But the best one is when you claim to have someone killfiled then reply
via one of your socks.

Nice work.  Pretty well sharpened for a change, good exposure,
background quite unobtrusive, composition good.

Just a touch more contrast and a more interesting subject/pose, and it
would be a winner.

But I've never seen a magpie attack anyone for not giving them food -
however, during nesting season you need a hardhat if you plan to enter
the exclusion zone around their nest.

Nice capture. Catch light in the eye gives a more alive feeling to the
image. The background is just soft enough to not distract from the
magpie yet shows enough of the habitat. Colors seem a bit muted but
they could be a realistic rendition.

Good focus. Good background. Good colors.

Keep at it. My hat's off to you to continuing shooting every day.

Thanks Draco but it's all due to Photoshop. There was no catch light.
The whole dark area of the head around the eye was 50.10.20 before I
used layering and some blending on it. I haven't normally bothered
working over POD shots but not having any brides to play with now, I'm
down to doing it on bloody magpies!

There is an ever decreasing likely hood I'll continue with the POD. I
can't get grass skirts, dark skinned people and big icebergs off my mind.

Ryadia is stocked to the max with tucker and I've just had a reverse
osmosis water system installed. It would be quite possible to stay at
sea with half a dozen people for many months at a time.

I advertised for a crew at the club and got no replies. I think I'll try
an ad in the papers and see what I get. For where I have in mind, I'll
need at least 3 crew. Everything is hydraulic but just getting a sail
out on deck is impossible for one person.

Sadly they have to bond themselves now on many South Pacific Islands.
Too many jumped ship and went bush with the natives in the past. Now
they want all skippers to put up a bond equal to the cost of deporting
all the crew (skipper included) or you can't land. The $4000 is what
stops otherwise willing crew members.

Why not just get Julian, Graham, Chris and the rest of the gang
together?  Those guys all work cheap.
