Only one lens?

Why?

I would forget about a DSLR and take my FZ50 in that case. Hot air
ballooning presumes a warm sunny day, plenty of light, and the FZ50 aside
from the problems associated with a small but high capacity CCD in low
light/high ISO situations, is in all other respects a brilliant camera. It
is my least expensive camera but the one I use most often and have the most
fun with.

probably a 270mm

probably because I like a 32-ish degree FOV - it's creates a level of
apparent compression that I like for many things :)

I have used a 12-24  and a 24-120  digital. fill flash.

heaps of shots within and around for the 12-24. gives some sort of
prospective as to your platform.

long lenses don't cover the basket.

16-45mm or perhaps 12-24 or 10-20, what do you have? Leave the 170-500mm at
home.

You want wide man.

I dunno the 90mm tamrom would be good at its f2.8 were as the 10-20  sigma
is f3.4

but yeah the 170-500 is too pervy in the balloon .
