Sandisk Extreme speeds

Has anyone experienced a notable difference in speed between Extreme III
and Extreme IV cards?

I bought some of the IV cards a couple of days ago, and was expecting to
see a notable difference in save speed when shooting raw, but really can't
notice much difference at all. Not without resorting to a stopwatch that
is. On their website they say that the IVs were "up to" 40MB/sec. They
don't seem to much better than the IIIs at 20MB/sec. I guess that "up to"
is more advertising blurb than reality.

No, no no...  It's real.  You just have to hold your mouth right and
wait for a north wind, then you'll get that 40MB/sec.  Otherwise I'm
afraid you'll have to make do with 21.

[But console yourself with the thought that at least the thing works.
Which is a *considerable* advance on the two Exigo thumb drives I
bought from Citysoft a year or so ago.  They nearly caused me the loss
of a week's worth of travel photos.  And would have, except my
inherent paranoia ensured I had also copied them to a couple of CDRs
as well as leaving a copy of them all on a friend's PC at the time.]

Cheers, Phred.

CF or SD?

SD are SDHC if they are bigger than 2Gb and read speed will be around double
the write speed.

CF in this case, in fact I don't think they make SD in Extreme IV yet. I
was using SDHC as soon as they came out then I moved up to Extreme II's
then Extreme IIIs. There was a noticeable difference in frame rate with
both those upgrades but none with this last one. I think that until I have
a camera that makes real use of any further speed increases I'll stick to
the Extreme IIIs.

Firstly, is your camera capable of those sorts of speeds?
Secondly, are they genuine IV cards, or "ebay specials" (ie
whatever sh.t they can get cheap and with copied IV logos
stuck on it)?

I use two DSLR camera systems, Canon and Nikon, plus I always carry a
Panasonic FZ50 with me as a general purpose camera. One of the many
advantages of being a girl is the expectation that you will carry half your
possessions with you in a large shoulder bag. I use a nice leather video
kitbag as a carryall. Even I don't know what is lurking in the very bottom
of that bag.

The Pansonic is SD only, not Compact Flash like the others, but using it
with SanDisk Extreme III SDs it seems as fast in practice at saving a 20+
meg raw file as the others with the SanDisk Extreme IV CompactDisk cards.

And yes, they are genuine SanDisk Extreme cards, purchased through a major
photographic supplier.

I went back to the store yesterday and they tell me that in their own tests
the card doesn't improve camera performance by very much, but it transfers
data much more quickly. In future I will be sticking to the Extreme IIIs,
the extra cost isn't justifiable.
