Keeping up with the Jones' and all of their birds shots, here is one
of our famous Aussie songbirds, the Kookaburra.  It was a bit out of
my outfit's usable range (whatever that means lol) so I have included
an arrow in the picture to point it out....

http://www.potd.com.au/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/KookaAndRailShed.jpg

On a side note.... I saw on tellie that they have now proven that all
of the 4500 species of the worlds songbirds originated from
Australia.      .Aussie Aussie Aussie.... oi oi oi !!!

The pic is too blurry to tell for sure but that bird looks fake.

nah... these are flighty creatures and hard to stay with, so I was
zooming with a Subaru Outback that day.  ;-)

Cool shot, made me laugh.

Is that a bird sitting on the ridge of the building?

So that has a universal mount?

Not really.... Subis are not the biggest mount, so fat a.ses may be a
problem.  I would suggest that my Prado or Landcruiser 100 mounts are
more universal.  LOL

That's a really interesting method you used to sharpen the image and
(almost) remove the chromatic abberations around the frontal lobe of
the balloon.
Phone camera, was it? Most definitely if you took it with an "L"
series lens you need to consider replacing it with some decent glass.

In all seriousness Russell...
If you can't see the purple fringe on the left edge of the balloon,
just under the beak (between the beak and the first line of feather
mark is where it is most prominent), and on the crown of the thing,
you probably ought to downgrade to a camera phone because you don't
have the skills to warrant all that expensive equipment you tell us
you have.

I can see it in your web image. It's clearly visible at 2000 pixels
and quite alarming at 4000 pixels wide. At first I thought you'd used
software to remove green fringe from the right side of the thing but
on closer examination the white 'halo' on that side is more likely
just from poorly done sharpening. You got to see the original. It must
have stood out like a beacon and you missed it?

Some of your images are very pleasant, many have technical flaws like
this one that would see them in my waste bin if I were considering
them for stock photos. With all the experience you claim to have and
indeed all the time you claim you've had expensive gear to play with,
of all people who post here, you should have seen such obvious flaws
and either junked the shot or just kept it until you got enough skill
to fix it.

I can understand a wannabe like Mark/Charles (spiderman LOL) posting
crap and not knowing it was. He couldn't take a decent photo if he
tried but you can. What happened with this one?

You get stuck into people you take a dislike to over trivial issues
and then line up for a dose of criticism yourself for faults way more
noticeable than those in the pics of who you target. I'm starting to
think you are one nasty bastard when you can't have it all your own
way.

All this from a small web reduced image.... geez you are good!  LOL
mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 17 Jan 2008 10:11 GMT
Possibly off topic, but I'm just trying to make DMac's comments into
something useful and educational.

> If you can't see the purple fringe on the left edge of the balloon,
> just under the beak (between the beak and the first line of feather
> mark is where it is most prominent)

Douglas, give us the image coordinates and the RGB readings that show
your alleged purple fringe.  I can't see it, but then we all know
about my colour perception problems.... (O:
Funny thing is, my *eyedropper* can't seem to spot it either....

So just give us those coordinates, OK?  If you can't, that would be an
admission of error.

> you don't
> have the skills to warrant all that expensive equipment you tell us
> you have.

It's good to see how you take the high ground and avoid personal
attacks.

> I can see it in your web image. It's clearly visible at 2000 pixels
> and quite alarming at 4000 pixels wide.
Fascinating.  On my screen (must be broken I guess) the image is about
420 pixels wide, and yet Douglas is looking at 2000 pixels and 4000
pixels.  That's magnifying it 5-10x!!!   And seeing stuff that no-one
else has commented about..

Wait.. perhaps he is not just zooming - maybe he is using a faulty
enlarging algorithm?

> At first I thought you'd used
> software to remove green fringe from the right side of the thing but
> on closer examination the white 'halo' on that side is more likely

There is indeed a small LIGHT (not "white") halo along some areas of
the image, but it is barely visible unless you foolishly zoom it up.
As anyone with a bit of imaging nouse knows, you can *only* evaluate
sharpening at the intended size.  Given that this is just a small web-
sized 'funny' image, I think the sharpening is pretty close to
optimum.  Perhaps a fraction overdone, but it seems only Doug (and now
me!) has a problem with it.

> It must
> have stood out like a beacon and you missed it?

More applicable might be a retort:
Your monitor is badly adjusted and you missed it?
You are doing exactly what you criticise others for?
(I quote: "You get stuck into people you take a dislike to over
trivial issues".. or in your case, you do it over issues that don't
even exist..)

> Some of your images are very pleasant

Yet a moment ago you were abusively telling him he didn't deserve
expensive equipment.  What a hypocrite.

> I can understand a wannabe like Mark/Charles (spiderman LOL) posting
> crap and not knowing it was. He couldn't take a decent photo if he
> tried but you can.

So, D-Mac, can you explain why both you and rita keep referring to
'fun' images, that were clearly not posted with even a trace of
egotism (please post quotes if you claim otherwise), and yet you
somehow fail to critique them and therefore be constructive in your
criticism?  Surely by specifying exactly what is wrong with them, you
will help others.  And then you can post *better examples*.

And why have you avoided referring to other images I have posted
recently?  Were the spider ones the onyl ones you thought worthy of
criticism (unspecified, of course)?

If you offer serious genuine criticism of my images, I will happily
respond, and post better versions.  That way everyone learns.  Why
can't you join in and try to be constructive for a change?  Haven't
you wondered why nobody is agreeing with you???

And now completely offtopic:
Why didn't you return to that thread where you posted false
information about the Australian rail network?
Just a reminder - the Trans Australia rail link was completed on Oct
17, 1917.  You got your WRONG info from a hobbyist site.  You were
wrong (go on, try and say it!) even though you claimed otherwise, and
then ran away.  Just admit it like a man, you big sook.  I can post
about 30 sites which give the correct date, if you want, including
timelines...

> You get stuck into people you take a dislike to over trivial issues

Like I said - you're a hypocrite.

> and then line up for a dose of criticism yourself

But don't you get it, D-Mac?  haven't you noticed?

Here's a big clue - the only one criticising is.. YOU.  And nobody
takes you seriously any more, except to pick on your mistakes.  So
getting bad reviews from you is a mark of honour!  Keep it up.

The thing is, you could turn that around if you wanted to.  But it
seems you don't want to, so do carry on as you are.

(At least Rita knows she is just an entertainer..)

Please post your photos.  I have been posting mine without a
worry.  You'll get some critique if you ask for it.  I want that
for my photos.  You won't cop those sort of attacks.

There is an ongoing "war of words" between a couple of regulars.
Lurk a little and you'll see who the main protagonists are.  They
will be nice to you on their own.  If there is unwarranted
aggression, it's usually not directed at you.

Hope that helps.  Now duck for cover as you get bombarded with
explanations and history lessons.

As a target of these obnoxious creeps I'll offer you some advice.

The only issue people like yourself have to bother with is when you
ask for help, get it from a knowledgeable (often qualified)
professional and some jerk still in nappies decides (with their 2 days
and 3 hours experience using a Kodak digicam) reckon they know better
and starts a flame war. It's way to common around here for it to be a
safe place for a female looking to learn something.

Personally, I'd highly recommend you head for a controlled or
moderated "forum" where idiots are banned. I subscribe to several
where the principal idiots who inhabit these uncontrolled photo groups
- the ones who have plenty to say but nothing about photography are
either removed quickly by the moderator, been banned because of their
behavior or they simply don't go there because they can't have any
"fun" when they have to behave themselves.

Try the Yahoo groups for starters.

Did Bret get banned from that "other" group or did he simply lose interest?

Rita
Annika1980 - 18 Jan 2008 13:39 GMT
> Did Bret get banned from that "other" group or did he simply lose interest?

I usually try to avoid moderated forums because I abhor censorship.
I'm a big boy and can decide for myself which posts to read and which
ones are just spam or trolls.
I've been banned recently from one moderated forum just for ragging
the moderator in private e-mails.
I did join APUG, however, at Ken's insistence.  I hardly ever read it,
though, and I tread lightly since anything mentioned about digital has
the same effect on those film luddites as sunlight has on Dracula.

Moderated forums are boring and usually die quickly.  You end up with
a small group of people who think exactly alike.  I don't want to live
in a world like that.  As they say, "If both of us always agree on
everything, then only one of us is doing any thinking."

There you go having a "Look-at-me" opinion (yet again).
Moderated groups are not about YOU being able to choose who's messages
to read but about everyone else having the freedom to participate
without fuckwits like YOU interfering with the rest of the
participants.

Far from dying, Moderated forums are flourishing, free from thieving
swine like you, people can get on with discussions about photography.
You should try it ...or figure out why that group of your name has no
posts to it. Got it yet?  Do the rest of us a favor and see if you can
hold your breath for as long as you keep hold your dick while you're
on Usenet.

I was banned as well for simply stating my opinion in a very polite
and placid way, so it's not just Bret.  The administrator has a
problem with people who disagree with his point of view.  All you're
left with is robot-like individuals who only function using one brain,
one mouth, one opinion, always being afraid to state their opinions
for fear of being banned.

No Helen... You are left with people who want to discuss subjects
without interjection and interference from a pair of idiots. You
didn't get thrown off the forum for having an opinion, you got kicked
out for trying to argue someone else down. Here's a tip. Never argue
with an idiot from Tennessee. They'll drag you down to their level
every time.

It goes like this:
It's OK to hold a different opinion.
It's OK too, to reply to a post with your different opinion.

It's not OK to engage someone else in an argument just because you
don't agree with them.
It's not OK to steal other people's pictures and announce  what you
did with them when you don't agree with someone else.
It's not OK to forge my identity and make out I advertised a wedding
package in a news group that was listed on E-bay after you filed a
complaint that my wedding photography package was listed in the wrong
category. And what is the interest from a Canadian bitch in an
Australian listing? None. You were just being a plain old fashioned
nasty bitch.

Your fraud is detailed here:http://www.annika1980.com/
silverberg_commits_fraud.htm No lies, all verified truth anyone can
substantiate with 5 minutes searching on Google.

It's not OK either to try and steal someone's password to there seller
account on eBay... These are exactly the disgusting behavior you and
your  idiot mate got up to instead of just being satisfied to post
your opinion. All the evidence about the both of you, over a
substantial period of time, behaving in the most obnoxious and
disgusting way any person could imagine is all detailed on
http://www.annika1980.com for anyone to see. No lies, not opinions,
just facts that can be verified by searching Google.

The kindest thing you could do for the rest of the Internet community
is simply dump your PC in the trash can and take up knitting -
anything that didn't involve communicating with other people because
yours and Bret's idea of "do as I say, not as I do" simply doesn't
work. Never has, never will. Learn some social skills or don't they
teach 'em in the gene pool you pair were hatched from?
mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 19 Jan 2008 10:13 GMT
(the usual)

So.. getting back on topic, does this mean you won't post the
coordinates to prove your claim of the purple and green fringing?  And
you therefore admit you were wrong?

Still rag'n on about poor pathetic little D-Mac, huh!
You have NO idea, NO concept on what happened.  I'm just glad we found

Don't EVER give me advice! OK! You're not my daddy.
BTW:  Just a little warning, be very careful what you say about me and
anyone else I care about Douglas.  I have friends out in Australia now
who take anything derogatory directed at me very personally.

He's not using email, and he's not using a newsreader either.
Googlegroups is a poorly implemented attempt at a web interface
for newsreading.  But that's another story :)

Still, not sure why his messages are missing the CR/LFs while
other GG posters show up fine.  They look a mess, content
notwithstanding.

my Radio phone, relaying messages from Ryadia to my home made computer

out like this? I thought the fact I can still participate (to some

So.. getting back on topic, does this mean you won't post the
coordinates to prove your claim of the purple and green fringing?  And
you therefore admit you were wrong?

Yes I would just love to know the names that Douggie has used that I have
apparently adored, I have made comment on pictures by a few posters, I dont
recall making any that were particularly full of adulation. Though I suspect
my positive constructive praise far outweighs your in these groups, probably

You might as well give up Mark.

Doug is really turning out to be aus.photo's very own Cookie Cutter
Shark.....  he comes out of nowhere, takes a chunk out of someone and
then bugger's off without ever explaining his actions.    There are
multiple threads where he makes claims, then fails to back them up
with any evidence when questioned.  These threads are left dormant
with only the sound of crickets occupying the space.

Of course Doug will find the time to respond to THIS post though and I
am sure that it will no more than insults and lies as always (and he
will prob ramble on about how he is the victim and I am the bad guy/
bully... LOL!!!!), but at least it might be legible this time, as it
seems that Doug must have fixed his "radio link" and "self made
decoder" as his last post's formatting was OK.

You seem to have (conveniently, as usual) forgotten your comments over
here:

http://groups.google.com.au/group/aus.photo/browse_frm/thread/df1edd8f17dd0cd9

When, after I corrected your alter-ego Prisilla about the date of
completion of the TARL, YOU said, and I quote:
> Not only has he got the date wrong by 5 years but for someone claiming to
> have lived in the area the line passes through, he hasn't a clue about it.
> "The Trans Australian Railway was started in 1910 and took two years to
> construct"

As I pointed out then, you were quoting a hobby website that was
WRONG.  So you were WRONG too.  The Trans Australia rail line was
finally linked up on October 17, 1917.  Five years after you said it
was.   Verifiable at many, many websites, history books, etc..  Trust
you to find the single wrong site on the 'net.  Born loser.

During that thread, you also said:
> Exactly what is it about you "Mark" that has you making such a total idiot
> out of yourself all the time?

Embarrassing, hey Doug?  Given I was right and it was you (and
'Prisilla') who was the idiot.

Then you said:
> Are you so obsessed with me that you can't think straight?
> Come on teach... Get it right

I did get it right, dunce.  And you just can't bring yourself to admit
it.

Senile?  ...or just puerile?

The current concept of God is anthropomorphic as Ludwig Feurbach noted
a
few hundred years ago. It is based on religion. Some have stated they
believe
the physical laws of the universe are GOD. However, we still don't
know all
those. Maybe one day we will. I don't believe or think God is in our
own image.
So on one level I'm an atheist and on another perhaps not. Looking at
the
world and God it doesn't seen to mix. Lot of squabbling and bloodshed.

Apparently, there is considerable evidence that Jesus did exist.
Whether or not God ever existed is another matter altogether. The
movie "Chariots of the Gods" produced some compelling images
suggesting God may have been a space traveler who seeded a female and
this is how Jesus was born with his (then) super natural powers.

I got extensively into the old testament a few years ago looking for
descriptions of wild grasses whose seeds I could use to make
traditional bread and understand the Kosher food laws. I can't
comprehend how such ancient literature can describe in great detail
"God" without ever producing any evidence of his existence.

The Jews are said to have uncovered more scrolls they are not
releasing to the world. Perhaps when scholars around the world get
access to them, it may shed some light on the subject. Until then I
subscribe to the theory that atheists are as radical as the religious
crackpots they poke fun at.

but there you go Douggie, I don't poke fun at religious zealots, I believe
in live and let live, if God floats your boat, then that fine by me, if you
believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, then again, more power to you, my
choice to not believe in a divine power is mine alone, I don't force it down
your throat, because lets face it, not many people have been turned to
either camp by someone yelling at them and telling them they are wrong :-)
I have a friend who I would consider a Fundamentalist Atheist, he will take
every opportunity to tell a Christian they are wrong, so far he is 0 for 100
in the convert stakes and very likely to stay that way, I find it is better
to let people come to their own conclusions either way and leave it at that.

Besides, where is the reward? - Christians get brownie points that get them
into their Heaven if they convert enough people over to their beliefs. But
we atheists have nothing to gain. so why should we bother? This is why I
stopped posting to the religious Usenet groups.....I was just wasting my
time. If they want to believe in those ridiculous myths, it's no skin off of

It depends on your objectives.  If you just want to join the "click" and be
part of the daily pissing match or be an individual and stimulate the idiots
with creative outtakes this is the place to be.  This is a good place to use
your 10-minutes for unwinding from the daily stress and stir the pot (sh.t)
and have fun with the indigenous populous. If you are serious about
photography you are in the wrong place.

If you should stay, here are a few guidelines (10 Golden Rules) to make this
enjoyable for you.

1) Never post technical correct or good images.

2) Never size them larger than 1024x768.

3) Always strip EXIF data to keep em guessing.

4) Always try to blow the highlights and keep just enough motion blur to
attract the critics.

5) Always use catchy titles that "hook" your audience.  It's best to include
the type of equipment used.

6) Always give your equipment creative pet names and include this in the
title.

7) Always use a hosting site such as Geocities with limited bandwidth.  This
keeps your targeted audience in suspense and provides more enjoyment for
them.

8) Always stimulate your critics by being extremely combative and obnoxious
as possible, they love it.  Critics love nothing more than being shitted
upon an abused to the max!

9) Optional methods are to take an extremely crappy image and crop and
Photoshop the sh.t out of it to create a composite.  This method is

permission from him.
