G'day mates,
Friend of mine out in the sticks has a $1000 Canon (? -- I'm getting
old -- maybe he said Nikon 8-) zoom lens with a screw loose somewhere
inside. (It rattles!) [I don't rattle yet, but I probably should!]
He was wondering how you get these things fixed. I said, send it back
to the supplier, it should be still under warranty. He said, the
suppliers (retailers) are a bunch of arseholes and he doesn't want to
have anything further to do with them.
He's happy to pay the repair cost himself (if it's half reasonable, I
suspect :) but wasn't sure who could do that sort of thing with these
new-fangled digital gizmos.
Given that there are no camera repairers (even the traditional style)
within cooee of where he lives, should he look up "lens repairs" in
the yellow pages at the PO, or do you need to take these things back
to specialist digital repair agents, or even the manufacturer? If
the former, does anyone have recommendations for a reliable service?
Cheers, Phred.

Thanks for your replies Garry/Linda and Michael.
The nearest big smoke to the guy is the tourist ghetto of Cairns.
I've done an online search and there's bugger all there these days (in
fact I got a bunch of irrelevant hits for places in friggin'
*Toowoomba* that allegedly "service the area". Jesus wept!).
Once upon a time there was a camera repair bloke with the compulsory
germanic accent in Cairns (I took my OM-2 and OM-4 to him a couple of
times) but he seems to have disappeared.
I must admit, if it was me, I'd take it back to the arsehole retailer
and tell them to get it fixed under warranty or I'd shove it where the
sun doesn't shine! But my friend has an exaggerated sense of
righteousness and if he decides someone is too shonky to deal with,
that's the end of it, in spite of the nose/face issue!
