Good news server for aus.photo?

I have just about given up on Google with it's missing messages and
delayed posts, so I have installed Nemo and was wondering if you guys
could recommend a good news server.

At the moment I am testing a couple of freebies, but it seems that
they don't get updated all that quickly.  Naturally I would like one
that is fairly quick and allows posts.

Cheers

Rusty

PS Let's hope this displays quicker than Google's 8 hour+ efforts.

G'day Russell.

Not sure what Nemo is.  Never used it.  Windows based?  Looked at
Xnews?  Probably the most powerful and netiquette savvy
newsreaders for Windows, and it's free. http://xnews.newsguy.com/

Look into Motzarella http://news.motzarella.org/
No complaints from me.

Nemo is for Mac and seems pretty good.

I will look into Motzarella, thanks for your help.

No worries.  After sending that last one I had a horrible feeling
they may not carry aus.* groups, but checked and I can confirm
they do.

It's free, and seems to be one of the most popular ones
recommended in the news.software.readers group I frequent.  I've
been using it for a couple of months now no worries.  May be a
smidgeon slower download for high traffic groups than my ISP's
news server, but that's to be expected.  Good luck.

Thanks Troy,

I can't seem to get to it from here, I have registered and setup my
user/pass combo but still no good.  Might need to look at my firewall.

Have you used Nemo successfully with other news servers?  Check
that it's set up to use port 119.

Do their registration details/email say there may be a delay
before you are registered and able to use it at their end?

Does your firewall allow all outgoing and just restrict incoming
ports?  Or do you restrict outgoing ports also?  What firewall is
it (hardware or software)?

Which server are you using?  I use the first one here:

Yep sure have and I have set this one up in the same way.  Yes 119 was
used.

No, but I am hoping that is the case.

My resident gateway/file server is a PC running PC-Cillan.  I tried
dropping the fire wall totally and still no go, so didn't bother
attacking it at an in/out port level..

Yep, that's the one.  I even tried the other two just to see.

It's been quite a while since I registered so I will give it another
try now.... brb

Back... and still no go. :-(

I will keep investigating, 'cause I love a challenge and also hate to
be beaten. ;-)

Thanks again

Whoohoo!!!  Got it working.  It was my fault :-(  ...I cut and paste
the server name and managed to leave an invisible character on the
end.  Doh!
"The old invisible character trick.... that's the second time I have
fallen for that this week!"
Seems to work well, big thanks once again. ;-)

Freebies - as in pay for what get?
None of them have any service guarantee. It's not until you purchase
service, you get to reach some degree of reliability. If you don't mind
paying (behaving yourself doesn't apply in your case) the Berlin University
is about as good as it gets.

That particular server has zero tollerance for people like Mark Thomas.
Their insistance on behaviour doesn't apply to you because you don't engage
in defamation, slander and propergating lies about people.
