Shooting the Lunar Eclipse?

mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 28 Aug 2007 10:46 GMT Anyone out there shooting/about to shoot the eclipse?
I'm not that motivated or equipped for anything much - I don't do looong tele work normally. And as for those hackneyed 16-exposures- going-across-the-sky-showing-the-entire-event? - well, I only just got home from work and it's already 1/3 of the way through, and besides, it's too much hard work getting the right exposures (or taking lots of shots to be sure, to be sure).. Lazy sob that I am.
The best I can reach out to (optically, of course) is about 450mm equivalent, but that's on a fairly small (1/1.8") 9Mp sensor. Maybe I'll give it a go at totality just for fun..
So... who's out there doing it properly (1DS III with L glass maybe? :o), and are you going to post some results here? (And I'm not really knocking the multiple exposure technique - just jealous of those with the patience!!)
I'd look forward to Roger Clark's contributions but does he get to see it? - I think only western US can view it..)
I just went out to look again, and it's about 7/8 eaten here... 7:45pm local Qld (AEST) time but sadly some high level cloud is fuzzing it out, so maybe no photos..

Ah well, next time.

Shot from my bedroom with my window open in Sydney's inner suburbs. Shot on my 30D with 2x teleconvertor and 70-200 f/2.8 L lens. Tripod and remote cable used naturally.

This was with the 70-200 2.8L and 1.4x and then cropped...
http://www.potd.com.au/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/MoonAndFriends_MG_4752.jpg
Exposure was 1/8 @ f4 3200ISO. I didn't bother with any noise reduction as I thought it would mask the detail too much.
Also, I chose to use the 20D and not the 1Ds2 for this, as the 20D offers greater pixel density.... that is, if I shot this with the 1Ds2 and then cropped it the same, there would be less megapixels making the image.

Just had a look outside and the back half is not as nice as the first.... there is a very defined shadow line and not much red. I guess the angles are all wrong now and I wish I had given it some time before. :-(

The link is too long for Google groups to display. Maybe you should find another method to prevent people downloading your images or stop posting links to them? It doesn't work BTW. You can still suck as many as you want.

So sorry everyone if you get the following twice.
http://tinyurl.com/2p8knw That link should be Google friendly... I hope.
re downloading images.... I don't bother with anything to prevent people downloading images, since there is nothing that can stop them anyway. (A screen grabber thwarts everything)
So basically I adopt the position that I would rather have my images downloaded a few times, than have them not seen at all. Having said that, I don't post links to full size images either.

I didn't get anything useful - the high cloud let me watch, but fuzzed the image out too much.
Link worked fine for me, just had to copy it to avoid the anti-leach thingy. D-Mac clearly isn't quite up to that level yet..

This is what I got with my D80, near the end: http://members.iinet.net.au/~nsouto/photos/DSC0061.jpg Sorry, got home too late to get the full on shade.

Nice shot, Noons. May I ask what lens, and does it stand much enlargement?

But the photo mechanic magicians in Pitt St Sydney did an excellent job on it for around 200 bucks: they replaced the zoom sleeve with a shop made one and fixed the creeping focus. Works like new now.
Can't complain, given it cost me only 300 bucks overall and can be used with film as well as DX dslr although only in manual meter. Been eyeing one for ages! :-) I'll still take it back at some future stage to get rid of a little bit of dust in one of the internal elements. But that can wait.
Bjorn likes it a lot as well: http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom_03.html#MF50-300ED
The image you saw is of the RAW file, no blow-up: just a crop. A touch of FM to give it zing - radius 1. Had it smack bang in the centre to avoid any distortion. Of course: used the timer to fire the shot and the tripod is a BIG and *heavy* Benbo.

Mind you: used ISO 100 and was quite surprised that I had to jack the speed all the way up to 1/125 at f11 to get detail: anything slower was totally washed out. Then I transposed that to film with Reala and a F2AS and am looking forward to the various brackets I made. The surprise was how much I had to jack up the speed when the disc was half-dark.
