Anyone recently purchased a colour photo printer around the $500 to $800
range and able to provide comments on their experience?  Is laserjet an
option to reduce running costs?

I would principally be using it to print brochures and manuals, but would be
prepared to pay some extra to get better photo prints.

Cheers,
John

You may get many who disagree but...
Xerox DocuPrint C525a printers produce excellent brochures with as close to
correct colour as any printer ever will. It can be coaxed to print onto 300
gsm card stock and 100 gsm gloss which makes great brochures.

As for Photo quality? It may surprise you, it may not. Personally I believe
it's photo capabilities to be about 7 out of 10. Quite good enough for most
situations where matt or low (semi) gloss surface is acceptable. I would
even go so far as to say it is an excellent "Proof" printer.

Running costs are about 30¢ per A4 sheet. They won't print borderless but if
you design your document to suit the printer, no it won't really matter.
It's A3 big brother is so much more expensive as to be out of contention for
anything but commercial use.

Thanks Douglas - I have not looked at Xerox, so thanks for the suggestion.

Cheers,
John
