Good grief, I'm still getting to grips with CS2!

And Lightroom, I notice! <s>.

CS3's selection tool "quick" and the refine edge palette are worth the
upgrade price alone.

I skipped CS2 except in class, and I do like the new version a lot.

for me, it is smart filters.  that's something i've been wanting for a
*long* time.

please explain "smart filter"..... what does one do?

it is basically an adjustment layer, but for filters.

smart filters are non-destructive, and one can go back and adjust the
filter or enable/disable it entirely, at any time.

here's a demo:

ur.html>

after the intro clip plays, click on smart filters.  check out the
other features too.

You are NOT required to upgrade.  I've still got CS1 on one
computer and the Adobe police have not yet been by.  ;-)

I'm still on Photoshop 7.

And with Lightroom, all I'm really doing in Photoshop is sharpening (since
Lightroom seems to be sharpening before, not after, noise reduction). So
upgrading isn't looking all that interesting. Especially since I'll need to
replace all the books; sheesh, what a scam it is.

I was happy with PS 5.5 but have been forced to upgrade incrementally
for raw converter compatibility with newer cameras. And I've enjoyed the
upgrades but do I get the whole 'good grief' thing too.

I have PS 7 but as I understand it, when I upgrade to a Mac Pro soon, it
won't run on Intel based machines, so I'll have to upgrade to CS3.

CS2 runs fine on one of the new Mac Pros (it's what I use). Older
software should also work fine, so long as it's not designed for
"classic". Classic apps wont run under OSX/Intel (but old G5 apps work
fine). One reason to go CS3 though is it is specifically optimised for
the new Mac Pros, and runs like lightening compared to CS2. Even the
early beta of PhotoShop CS3 that I used was maybe 10 times faster than
CS2 on the same machine at some filters, and the whole thing just much
much more responsive and snappy.

I can't wait for my copy to arrive!

My problem is PS7 is classic and I figure since it's inevitable, I might as
well bite the bullet and jump into CS3. I'm not looking forward to spending
an amount equivalent to a used car on new software and hardware, but I guess
10 years between Major Upgrades is an acceptable ROI.

feature rich program, and now it's about to be obsoleted by CS3?  Is this a

Ok, I'll bite.  What's so great about CS3 that I would want to upgrade from

A useless putdown.

I'll ask ... so what is there? I'm interested in things that
would interest Ansel Adams. I.e. layers, masks, burn tools,
and filters and how they work.

I'm still learning CS2.

Good on ya.

I'm not here to argue or persuade anyone. Those who are interested and
internet-savvy can easily find out what the differences are. I have no
idea if the person I replied to is internet impaired, a troll, a newbie,
an argue-er or a really nice guy asking a sincere question. I have my

Frick, think they could have made it any more confusing? Six separate
packages? Photoshop Extended? WTF?

My main concern is this: does Photoshop (standard) CS3 still let you
save-for-web, or did they remove that ability to promote Fireworks?

Yeah, you can save for web.
Now we get people complaining that there are too many choices! I do
understand the overwhelming-ness of it all, but for me, it's Lightroom
first and PS CS3 second for image processing. CS3 for everything else
that's not necessarily a photo I've shot.

I'm pretty sure CS3 extended is just new stuff for 3D video game
developers. There shouldn't be anything missing for photogs.

Thanks for posting that link!  All of the other early reviews that I have
seen so far just basically repeat the the hazy language from the original
corporate announcement.  This link clearly explains what CS3 Extended really
does!
Wayne J. Cosshall - 28 Mar 2007 09:02 GMT
PS Extended seems aimed at three core constituencies: 3D people, which
includes games people but also many illustrators who work with 3D files,
think car images for ads, etc; and scientific image makers, like
microscopists, etc, who need to not only enhance images for publication
but also take measurements, etc; and video effects people.

Cheers,

Unless you're running an Intel based Mac, I believe they've gone
Universal Binary with this.

Illustrator CS2 falls over *all* the time on my MacBook Pro. I'm pretty
sure that it being for Power PC is the problem.

I've tested PS CS 3 a lot on my MacBookPro, and it is way faster than
its predecessors. I'm pretty sure Illustrator will also see a large bump
in speed. We'll know ere long.

Does anyone know if the latest CS3 ACR version will work with CS2? I
really don't do that much in photoshop these days after working more &
more with raw but I do like the ACR that comes with CS3 beta (curves!)
and I've been using that just for raw conversions with CS for all the
batch actions I got working smooth in CS1 but CS1 does not not run a
version of ACR that will convert my D200 raw files.

It won't - "plug-in incompatible with this version of Photoshop".

ACR 3.x in CS2 has Curve, although not as powerful.

If you convert D200 NEFs to DNGs, (using a late enough DNG Converter),
those than be opened in ACR 2.4 with CS.

Great, thanks, that worked with the latest DNG converter at 67% file
size, even including a medium sized preview image. My laptop really
isn't fast enough to run CS3 anyways.

I just want Photoshop and I'd possibly use Bridge.  Why is there such a huge
gap between Elements and full-blown CS?  I hate Adobe.  I don't freakin'
need Illustrator, Indesign, and Acrobat.

You probably don't need many of the additional features that CS3
offers over Elements 5.0 either.

If Elements 5.0 offers all you need, why waste money on CS3?

As far as I know you still can't create actions with Elements.  I think
that's the last reason I won't move back to it.

OK, then think about buying an earlier version of Photohop and upgrade
to Photoshop CS2/CS3 (not the full Creative Suite) from that.

That's the plan.  I had trouble finding the standalone Photoshop CS3 so
thought Adobe had gone to suites only, hence my bitch.

Sorry for the second reply, but you can buy Photoshop CS2 on its own,
without having to buy Illustrator, Indesign, and Acrobat.

To keep the cost down, you can always buy a legal copy of an earlier
version of Photoshop (cheaply, on eBay for example) and pay to upgrade
it to CS2.  You can save $$ hundreds that way.

I'm not sure what the arrangements are for CS3, given that there are
two versions of Photoshop, further complicating the issue.
