Hi folks,

I'm going down to the Airshow at Avalon this weekend.  It'll be the first
time for me so I'd appreciate any photography related tips from people
who've been there before.  I've only got a 300mm lens (no IS) but I do have
1.4X and 2X TCs.

Also, is it worth paying $150 for a gold pass, as opposed to $45 general
admission?  The gold pass gives you grandstand seating in front of the
runway, but is it worth the extra bucks?  I mean, do you get that much
better pics from the grandstand.

Any and all responses will be appreciated.

TIA.

The planes are in the air, I would say that you wont have an issue.

I'd be thinking about a neck brace.

It's setting the exposure against the glare of the sky.

In most areas you can elbow your way to the front since there is some runway
activity.  I actually enjoyed spending the day near the apron watching all
the planes taxi in and out and preparing for take off.

remember your teleconverter will cause your autofocus to go gaga.

go for the up close and personal shots on the airfield rather than
trying to wast too many photos on highly contrasty fast moving
aircraft.... though I would still try!

My tc doesn't affect my af
at least not with my 1.4 with my 400mm f5.6
300D with 400 f5.6 + 1.4 tc although the exif wont register as it is a
tamron sp tc

When shooting in the air make sure all af points are turned on.

<nods> That's because it's a non-Canon TC that wires the electrical
contacts straight through to the lens, so the camera doesn't know that
it's there. If you use a Canon TC, the body switches off the AF if it
adds up to more than f5.6. (Some people put tape over one of the
contacts to trick the camera into not doing this.)

Depends on the camera. It sounds like the OP's shooting Canon, in
which case the AF should be okay with any lens+tele combination no
larger than f5.6.

And it's fun anyway. ;^)
