Waterproof Camera Bags for SLRs

David Springthorpe (The Original) - 24 Feb 2007 10:22 GMT I'd like to take my DSLR with me in the kayak but I'm scared it's going to take a swim at some stage. I sighted an Ortlieb waterproof SLR camera bag at the kayak shop but the $195 price tag put me off (yes, I know, small price to pay for a dry SLR, but still a lot). Does anyone know where you can buy these cheaper online (I've checked eBay) ?
Thanks. Helpful replies acknowledged, abusive trolls ignored.

I'd probably include a couple of big lumps of styrofoam in the bags to assist with flotation. While I haven't tried this with a camera yet I've kept plenty of meals, a gps, radio, and my mobile phone dry with doubled plastic bags.

Yes, that would probably do for MOST instances - I'm thinking of the time I'd take a tumble and have to swim and the bag starts floating away.....
Joan - 24 Feb 2007 11:42 GMT Wouldn't you use a coiled lead like a long key chain but stronger to attach it to a waist belt?
Would you intend to use the camera while in the kayak?

Yes, but we're going down a side-track here - complete waterproofness is the issue, not whether a bag is going to go floating off (and which is retrievable).
>Would you intend to use the camera while in the kayak? Yes - that's the point, but with the ability to quickly secure it.
Good folks, PLEASE killfile the troll GLIII (like I now have) - he made a promise not to mention my aged mother who died in some distress and pain in hospital last year, and he is clearly not prepared to do this. As well, he is also cross-posting to irrelevant groups I have previously posted to. This is the way this person gets his perverted kicks.

At least I don't get my perverted kick like you do, peeping though Ivana McAlpine's window (yes she told me all about that and your snowdropping activities)
? - 25 Feb 2007 00:36 GMT Gordon......who really cares????? This IS a photography group (or at least I THOUGHT it was) not some mud-slinging, name-calling group where all the little schoolboys congregate in a vain attempt to see who can be voted Most Nasty Person of 2007.
Get a life and go walking with your camera!! At one time this 'used' to be a helpful group but those days are long gone! ;-(

I too enjoy kayaking & recently purchased a K10D. I am interested in keeping it dry in such circumstances & I will have a look at the bag mentioned by David.

You can racially attack another posters 3 month old daughter and another posters mentally disabled son for working in a sheltered workshop but no one can mention your mother? I think it is a case of what goes around comes around.
David, you are an embarrassment to you family, I wish they could see the way you carry on and how you insult a baby but when the tables turn you promise to never post into that group again but instead change to a dog fetish name (Howling Doggy & Sick Puppy).
Kenny Rogers may have said "It don't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek" but he meant if someone starts on you *not* turn it after you start the fight (which you are well known for).
I hope you're old enough to understand, sometimes you've got to fight when you're a man.
Thank you
Ron

And since your in the water with it, you would both be floating the same way yes ??

syracuse - 24 Feb 2007 21:26 GMT David! You have a kayak, an SLR, a coiterie of lenses, no doubt a pretty flash pack, EPIRB maybe GPS & you're whinging about a further $195? But it immediatley & report back in the affirmative to this group (cross posting to aus.bush so Roger can include in his FAQ).
OR (I just thought)
a 2nd hand Colostomy bag, sealed at outlets & inlets. This will solve all three issues. (Will remain with you, cheap, waterproof)

His mum just died (in suspicious circumstances) and he's been squandering the inheritance money left and right, and now he's too tight to spend another $195.
Typical of a man child who never procreated, and never amounted to anything.

f.ck off Springshit, you're banished.

Do we really need someone like you here? No, f.ck off, don't pass go, in fact a Vietnamese jail would be about right.

D. Springthorpe - 25 Feb 2007 01:56 GMT >Look at using a plastic bucket such as those that swimming pool chorine comes in. Yes perhaps, but I forgot to mention completely WP compact SLR snoot bag (which is what the Ortlieb is) useful also for very wet bushwalking.

I wonder how good it would be for very humid bushwalking. I almost lost my MZ60 in Brisbane Forest Park to condensation 18 months ago. It started out as a very cold morning when I set out with my camera around my neck as I've done many times in the past, and although it wasn't raining, it was _very_ humid in the rainforest. For the first half hour, everytime I used it I had to wipe condensation from the front lens element - after about half an hour though I noticed that even after cleaning that I was still seeing haze - the lens had developed condensation inside. Then a few minutes later the camera started snapping away by itself - I removed the batteries to stop it, and noticed that inside the battery well there was moisture. When I got home the camera wouldn't turn on. Dismantled it, and there was water inside the circuitry, almost as if the camera had been dunked. Left it to dry for several days dismantled and away it went again. The lens didn't fair quite so well - the condensation inside left marks on the inner elements, which even after dismantling couldn't be properly cleaned off. Thankfully it was only a budget lens, not a piece of expensive exotic glass.

I doubt that Pentax would claim that it would survive being washed down rapids but it may defeat the humidity problem. I'm not sure that the interface between the lens & body is so well sealed. The old screw mount might be better there but you can't have both.
