Just got a flyer from a large online shop that I buy from
periodically. I've had a quick look at some other sites and it seems
like this is a significant discount... good enough to jump in and grab
one. Can anyone else do anywhere near this?

I'd say it's just a conversational quirk of the person who wrote it.
Immediately after that s/he says:

and more, and YES, it's the "REAL McCoy".

I've already ordered a 16Gb card so if it's a ripoff price I need
someone to tell me quickly. *grin*

I am wondering why you have (The Original) after your name

Troll off.

Yes its a good price, who would have thought you could get 16GB of any kind
of ram for such a low price.

Maybe, but since you can get 100GB of hard drive camera storage for $200, I
still can't see the value in it myself.

I have a 1DsII and use RAW mode so I've found the ~200 shots that fit
onto a 4Gb card a little limiting. I was considering purchasing
another 4Gb card, or perhaps an 8Gb, but the price of this is too good
to pass up.

Now, all I need is a matching 16Gb SD card as redundant
backup.................

Fair enough if that's what you need/are prepared to pay for. I'm happy
enough still using 2GB cards and a Hard Drive, but I don't shoot continuous
mode very often. ( I do shoot RAW exclusively though) But then again I don't
have a 1DSII either (but would certainly like one :-)
It's the old story however, if you can afford the camera, not much point
skimping on lenses or even memory cards I guess.

800 shots is a hell of a lot of eggs in the one basket

It's more that 200 shots limits me (on occasion). I'm not going to say
that I'll never do 800 shots in a single session, because one day that
may not be true. ;)

My camera can write each shot to both the CF and SD cards
simultaneously for redundancy, but at the moment I'm not even sure
that a 16Gb SDHC product exists. I'll probably grab a 4Gb SDHC card
for now, which means that if the CF card fails I will still have the
first 200 shots duplicated on the SD card.

Hmmm, do I smell trolling? CF is flash ROM.

No, it's RAM. If it was ROM, you wouldn't be able to write to it.

Ok, CF is block erasable programmable read only memory. Is that
better?

It can be somewhat randomly accessed but it doesn't fit the classical
definition. Comparing 16Gb of flash ROM to 16Gb of RAM is like
comparing apples with oranges. :)

Much. ;)

No, it's more like comparing apples to pears - different, but with a
lot in common.
