I am looking to buy a printer mainly to print high quality black & White
digital photographs. Does any one have any suggestions- up to around $1000.

My HP Photosmart 8450 used to do damn fine B&W's with the 3tone HP100
cartridges, but they're hard to find these days. Seems HP are phasing out
HP100 inks.

and once again this seperates the camera companies from the electronic
companies!

have you noticed a tendancy for electronic companies to force upgrades
of hardware... ie no more ink tanks, sony dropping support of memory
stick (original) etc. etc. etc.

I must admit... this is something only really starting to make itself
clear, is the ongoing support received from camera companies.... unlike
electrnics companies.

p.s. Sony sux.... great cameras, but sony themselves suck eggs!

I doubt very much that will happen.  They are legally obliged
to supply ink for at least 5 years after the product is
dropped.  The 8450 is still available for sale.

It's odds on that whoever told you they are dropping the 100
series is more intent on selling you on Epson than anything else.

Ah yes:  if your supplier is not interested in carrying those,
which happens as most of them are only comfortable in carrying
Epson materials, then just find another supplier.  A simple
search will show where to find the supplies anywhere.

actually, I am not so sure on this.... I think the term is 'For a
reasonable period of time"

who decides..... the judge!

I had a customer with a kodak Ls755.... needed parts 12 months after
purchase.... no parts, outa luck!

that's a CAMERA!!!!! most companies would not think twice nowadays
before dropping support for a product.... as mentioned previously... I
think this is the tendancy of electronic companies more than actual
camera companies.... of course this does not include kodak!

used to be 7 years.  Now I do believe it is 5.
But, chief: the 8450 is STILL available new and part
of the current HP's range.  It MUST have supplies of ink.
Period.

No need for a judge.  Ah, and Fair Trading
is enough for this sort of thing.

Just to be on the fair side: my Epson Stylus Photo 700
had ink available for it for the 6 years I kept it.
Regardless of it being out of manufacture after
the first 2.  You can still get ink for it now.  And it
is a dedicated container: it only fits that model.

There is no way I'll believe HP is "dropping a line
of colour": that's just sheer, pure, unadulterated FUD
from some dishonest retailer.

Of course! After all, they dropped Kodachrome, the bastards!...
;-)

But I'd be tempted to take them to FT and court if they
tried that on me: the law is very clear and doesn't give
a hoot if this is an electronic company or not.

actually I started researching it on behalf of the customer as it is
completely unacceptable.

Funnily enough the customer let it slide.... after only 12 months I
would have personally pursued it!

that's where I got the 'reasonable period' info from the ACCC.

out of curiosity, when was that?

maybe 18-24months ago.

Sorry, my apologies.  That should have read:
the 100 cartridge series printers are still available for sale.

I know because the 8750 uses them as well and that
one is still available from HP.  But yes: you won't
find them in the local Tandy or Officeworks: they
wouldn't have a clue about photo printers, all they
sell is volume.  You'd need to go to Harris
Technology or some other more serious supplier.

Have a look at how many black cartridges are in printers, i.e. Epson
have expanded ink sets.  Remembering that its uneconomical to be
changing cartridges just to print Black.

You can get ink cartridge sets for a few printers that are setup so they
print grey scale.     http://www.piezography.com/media/shutterbug.pdf

Another group to ask in would be.    comp.periphs.printers.
