I hope that's not a typo. I know how you feel about me but I'd be
disappointed in you if you've made an effigy of me.

Now that you mention it, I originally wrote "Kewpie" and when the spell checker
asked me if I meant "Kelpie" I was nearly going to let it.....

That is that spot in Sydney where the gay male prostitutes used to
hang out in the early 80's before they found out they could make more
dressed in drag on William st.

Hang on what are you doing there?

Extra points for anyone that can name the tranny in the door way?

Are you sure? I was at that exact spot on the same day last year, and the
sun was in that position at 18:18:54
If any crimes were committed in the area between 1755 and 18:18:54 you
clearly don't have an alibi.

And about the shot. of course I metered manually and shot in RAW instead of
in auto and JPG and exposed the shot correctly.

Geez David, I'm just giving you some very simple tips to help in high
contrast situations. At least if you're shooting in jpg, knock you contrast
back to -1

Next time try using a tripod and going from F8 to f15

Maybe exposure to around 1/10

The only thing missing from that picture which might have moved it to the
"Art" class is a line of element flair and some post processing in
Photoshop. The image is very workable and in the hands of the right person
could be made into a really nice picture.

The thing I find so odd about Bret's obsession with the issue of highlights
being "blown" is that as far back as 1965, I and such historically
successful Portrait Photographers such as the late Peter Fox (two Melbourne
city studios) have been using blown highlights to create artistic images or
obfuscate objects in a photo that by necessity could not be composed out.

Wedding Photography is not done in a studio, you have to make the best of
what you are presented with. No hope of booking a shoot and packing up your
gear because it's raining or the sun is too harsh or you don't like standing
on building rubble to get a shot. You have no option by to make the best of
what you have.

http://www.brisbaneweddingphotographers.com/images/rach-1.png  Is just such
an example of making do with a bride preparing herself in an overcrowded,
unfinished house being renovated and used as an office while housing two
families.

This art print uses blown highlights and image diffusion where the original
had none to conceal the fact this lady was in an office environment for her
wedding portraits. I used a program called "mystical lighting" to obtain
this effect with Photoshop.

It's true that my style of wedding photography is different. That doesn't
mean it should be degraded by idiots looking to grandstand at my expense.
Different styles is what makes this world a colourful place. Bret Hogan is
obsessed with technical correction in an image. I prefer to use my camera as
a tool for artistic expression.

That's just one reason why he take photographs for fun and I take them for a
living.
Incidentally... Should I get the http://www.Anika1980.com wedding gallery
out of moth balls to demonstrate how not to blow a highlight?

I think there is a difference between going for a "high key" look like
you did there and blowing highlights that could have been maintained
using proper technique.

One is intentional and one is not.

I even tried my hand at the high key look.
Maybe you remember this one?
