Yeah it's pretty neat. I noticed in your pics it is much higher in the
sky than it was here. By the time the sun had set sufficient to see it,
it was only just off the horizon. Must be due to the different latitude.
Apparently in the south island of NZ it will be circumpolar soon (ie,
visible all night, never setting).
I went out last night again, and it was about half the brightness that
it was on friday night. I stayed out longer last night and once the
light had faded, it was clear that the tail was much much longer than I
had seen the previous night.
I've added some more pics to my site, that I took last night with my
lowly S2IS. I shot some film last night too, so in a couple of days I'll
add that too (if it worked out). The last image I have uploaded,
img_4833, shows the tail spanning out considerably. Unfortunately, the
S2IS can only do 15sec exposures, and at ISO400 the noise is disgusting.
Hopefully 4 Minutes on ISO100 film will show it up better. I saw a photo
someone else took with a 400D the night before that showed the tail
arching out and going back to the horizon - amazing stuff.

Second one is noisy but I tried to lighten it to see how long the tail was.

Wow!
Great shot.

I couldn't get that much out of the tail even with a 30 second shot.
Congrats

Thanks Jeff, I was stoked when I saw the first one on the computer
screen.  I was on my way home when I saw it so I just grabbed my gear
and was setting it up as I was walking to the location.

If it is clear tonight I will hopefully have a bit more time to set up.

The first one was 15 seconds and the second one 30 seconds
