Fortunately I didn't have a problem with orientation, but the bloody
wind was a doozy.

Yeah, it was windy here too, as you can see by the trees. There were
more shots than I posted, but the wind was moving the camera/tripod. I
was using my telescope tripod, which is a heavy duty one my father made
- weighs in at around 30kg!! despite that the wind was still shifting
stuff around at times. Tonight doesn't look promising - this morning we
have 100% cloud cover and rain.

Same here. I was on a Perth beach with a D100 and a 180mm f2.8. The wind
was very strong but luckily the tripod was heavy enough to counter act that.
I was surprised how well the shots generally turned out. The comet was
clearly visible with ambient light from the sinking sun so I was
initially shooting at speeds as high as one fifteenth.

Just got back from my third lookit at the comet.
Faur dinkum - the tail must've been 5° long!
After I packed up and when I was walking away, I glanced back and still saw
the tail poking way above the horizon, 'though the head had set.
This comet has been great value!

I never got to see it myself, we never had a clear horizon and I was prob
too far north anyway :-(
But plenty of members on my web site did.... here are a few of the
"stand-outs" if you are interested. (click on the image for a larger view)
