mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 15 Jan 2007 12:07 GMT I thought the following image was a hoax when I first saw it, but no, it's real:
http://spaceweather.com/comets/mcnaught/10jan07/Kaluzny1.jpg
I only found out about this tonight - there is a rather bright comet passing the Sun at the moment - but I gather it has not been favourably placed for viewing down-under until now.. (At sunset, look to the left of Mercury and Venus)
I'm sure some of the folks here can do better than the above effort...
Apparently it was, and may still be, even *daylight* visible a few days back - how the heck did I miss this news?? I gather the Australian media are disinterested...? )O; And with my luck the damn thing will have faded dramatically by the time the Brisbane skies clear...
mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 15 Jan 2007 12:12 GMT Finder charts here:
http://www.skymaps.com/comets/2006p1-s1.html
Note those are simulated comet images - wish they wouldn't make it look so spectacular - if it *does* look like that I'll probably faint and miss some shots - good comets do not come along often...
Joan - 16 Jan 2007 08:10 GMT Saturday should be interesting if all that fits in the field of view.

Pete D - 16 Jan 2007 09:36 GMT Went out for a try just now but we have cloud in the west, bummer. Will try again tomorrow. I have a nice clear hill to shoot from but it is not unusual to get a bit of cloud in the west this time of year. :-(

Joan - 16 Jan 2007 09:40 GMT There's muck on the horizon here too, but I'm not sure of the compass angle to search.

Pete D - 16 Jan 2007 10:00 GMT I took a compass with me. The link that Mark gave for skymaps is pretty good, has W and SW marked on it. From where you are though it may be too low on the horizon with the Blue Mountains in the way.

That would be pretty much due West.. Just after/at sunset - keep looking where the sun went down! You should see one very bright star (actually it's Venus) a bit to the right, and one less bright one (if you're lucky, for Mercury is generally difficult to see in the remaining glare from the sun). Just to the left of those, but still almost exactly where the sun went down, you may see the faint streak quite close to the horizon.
Sadly I was clouded out here too (just south of Bris). Weather looks good for the next few days, but yep, clouds are common in the west at night..
mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 16 Jan 2007 10:34 GMT > Just after/at sunset - keep > looking where the sun went down! You should see one very bright star [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > almost exactly where the sun went down, you may see the faint streak > quite close to the horizon. For the sake of a full description, I should also add - the comet, like the stars and planets, is of course 'following' the Sun - I think you only have about 40 minutes or so after sunset to catch it.. The actual time it remains visible above the horizon will depend on how high you are, and how low the horizon is. The higher you are, and the lower your 'local horizon' is (buildings and hills are not good things!), the better your chances of seeing it against a somewhat dark sky.
I had a few brief tries to see if I could spot it during daylight today, but failed. I suspect it may have significantly lost brightness. dang.
Jeff R. - 16 Jan 2007 13:32 GMT Got 'im! (Tuesday evening)

It's sad that some people can't tell the difference between the condensation trail of a jet aircraft and a comet....
mark.thomas.7@gmail.com - 18 Jan 2007 11:05 GMT WoW!! It's *nice!* Had a rather hectic race up Mt Tamborine to catch it just above a cloudbank - sorry, no fancy backgrounds or careful composition, just slapped the S9000 on a tripod and banged off a few shots:
www.marktphoto.com/DSCF0435.JPG
and the wider view (comet (faint) to left, Venus to right)
www.marktphoto.com/DSCF0430.JPG
(Yes, the wind was blowing...)
Well worth seeing - I definitely recommend finding a good vantage point if the next few nights are cloud free in that direction. Look to the SW, left of Venus, just after sunset, and you have about an hour to watch before it drops too close to the horizon... Let's hope it doesn't fade too quickly.
Might try to be a little more artistic tomorrow night, weather permitting.

I just got back from my expedition to the shopping mall rooftop carpark, and will post some pix later tonight of the comet dancing around some clouds.
He sure looked good tonight. Tail was at least 2° long.

It was still very bright last night - found it easily from, of all places, the little lookout at the top of Elephant Rock, on the coast near Currumbin (not exactly an ideal location, with a hill to the west and lots of light pollution. Nice meal at the CSLC club too - and hi to the folks we pointed it out too..! (O;
One last addition - this one taken on Friday night (19th), when it was visible briefly at Mt Tamborine, before the clouds rolled in. Fuji s9500, 450mm equiv., f4.6, 4sec.
http://www.marktphoto.com/DSCF0440.jpg
(Reduced and slightly cropped, with an actual-pixel-size inset of the head for reference. Saturation and contrast boosted to help delineate the features)
Still no artistic foreground, but the clouds look nice (O;, and I was quite happy with these results from a prosumer (admittedly fitted with a Minolta 1.5 teleconverter..). Getting very fond of the s9500 - very good allround camera - and if it had IS and a faster charging flash, I would be deleriously happy, but I'm not really complaining....
