Wayne J. Cosshall - 03 Jan 2007 23:42 GMT Hi All,
I've put up on my site an image pair of the full moon I shot last night. The left one is visible light with my 400D, the right one is an infrared image with my modified 350D. There's a link to the higher res version for those interested: <http://www.dimagemaker.com/index.php>
Cheers,
Wayne

No, the MTO is a true maksutov design, but made by the same factory. My lens is this one http://www.rugift.com/photocameras/rubinar_1000_lens.htm it's of mixed design, that uses 2 corrector plates instead of one like MTO. Its resolution is supposedly better than MTOs.
It works even better as a telescope, you'll need this for 100x magnification http://www.rugift.com/photocameras/tourist-fl-eyepiece-attachment.htm It's realy much sharper when used for viewing. For stargazing you'll want to invest in a diagonal sooner or later.
I also have a 2x teleconverter. For viewing it's ok, but for taking pictures it was always soft - might as well crop the 1000mm shot. But it may be due to mounting it on the extension ring instead of on the lens directly.
You'll also need an adapter for your camera.
But beware, you'll also need these http://www.rugift.com/photocameras/utzt_extensions_rings.htm because the lens is too wide for mounting on most modern cameras. Due to extension you'll also need to adjust the infinity focus, which is not very difficult.
I actualy completely removed the focus "limiter" and can now focus to 2m with decent results.

Paul Furman - 05 Jan 2007 06:57 GMT > Hi All, > [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > for those interested: > <http://www.dimagemaker.com/index.php> Any concluisions from the two methods? They look similar.
Wayne J. Cosshall - 05 Jan 2007 11:29 GMT >> Hi All, >> [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Any concluisions from the two methods? They look similar. The ir image is naturally sharper than the visible one, but this makes sense with the remove of the anti-moire filter which goes usually with the ir blocking filter when a camera is modified. It also seems to have more natural contrast.
I am going to try creating false color by combining visible and ir shots but that will have to await a clear night.
Cheers,
Wayne

Mr.Bolshoyhuy - 05 Jan 2007 18:57 GMT > Hi All, > > I've put up on my site an image pair of the full moon I shot last night. nice shots.
I used a Kodak P850 with a 420mm lens to shoot a full moon.
At first, I used slow shutter speeds: 1/30, 1/60, with f2.8 as it was night. That was dumb(duh!) as the sun's light was reflected off the moon and made the pics too bright. Thus, I increased to 1/400, and ISO100 and it was fine.
Since you used f8 with slow shutter speed, I'd like to know why?. Do you feel it's better than using something like f2.8 with higher shutter speeds? Did you try both ways?

While we're shooting the bull about shooting the moon :-), does anyone have links to info for relative newcomers on the subject? I just got a K100D for Christmas, and I'm still low on the learning curve for things beyond the basics. I used to shoot film with my old K1000 body, but the last few years I have just used my Canon Powershot A80. We do have a few nice SMC lenses for the Pentax, and I was tempted to pop the 80-200 zoom on there and try for the moon. I wasn't sure if there's any chance of damaging hte sensor by overloading, though, so no moon pix from me this month. Not till I can figure out using the old manual lens with the newfangled body. :-)

I wanted to put the lens at it's sharpest aperture. Most lenses are sharpest a few stops down from maximum. The shutter speed was still fast enough for there to be no motion problem.
