Hi,
I am looking for a new, more trendy way to display my images online. At
present I use Coppermine and while this is pretty good, it gets a bit clunky
at times with having to click the thumb to open the intermediate, then click
the intermediate to open the large view in a new window.
I can set it to avoid the "large in new window" thing and have the large
take the place of the intermediate, but this would slow things up for
dial-upers. Plus then there is a little knowlege needed to find you way
around with the slideshow & breadcrumb etc. For regular Coppermine uses
it's not a problem, but for the first time visitors it can get a little
confusing.
I see many people have opted for the Flash gallery thing with small thumbs &
preloaded images that appear beside the thumb gallery, but I hear many
complaints about Flash and how slow it is etc.
So if anyone knows of a really cool bit of gallery software as an "out of
the box" solution, please let me know.

For regular users Picasa Web is fantastic. 250MB free disk space or you
can pay to have more (e.g US$25 for 6.25 GB). RSS feeds are available so
people can see your new photos almost as soon as you upload them without
needing to be told by you.
If you have a photo in your home collection you just click the Web Album
button, choose the album you want to put it into and hit upload. I think
6000px wide is the max res but I've used the default max of 1600. Big
enough if people want to print a 6x4 which is what my family and friends
would do.

Thanks Ben, but I want to self-host this as I have my own 200gb dedicated
server.

Oh, self hosting. Of course I should have known what that meant.
Anyway, I tried JAlbum about 2 years ago and it kept failing to apply my
changes when doing certain combinations of actions. No doubt there's a
newer version now.
Please let us know which you choose.

At this point I have re-arranged my Coppermine gallery a bit..... I do like
how easy Coppermine is to maintain and add images etc.
http://www.pixelpix.com.au/gallery so will prob stick with it for a while.
I will keep investigating what's available however and with luck I will find
something that is right for me.
Thanks everyone.
