Canon 30D with 70-200 f2.8 IS USM lens decisions

Jack - 16 Nov 2006 12:20 GMT Hi all and informative people, Have been trying to make a decision on a DSLR camera/lens to purchase with my fairly limited budget..have read many reviews on so many cameras and the 30D slips into my 'body only' price range but would like a great lens to go with it (incase I go for top of the range when I can see my way there) for action/motorsport and general photos. A friend is a Nikon nut and was swaying my thoughts to say, the Nikon D200 or D2H but have read how good the CMOS sensor in Canon is compared to the CCD in Nikon.
Any suggestions and help would be very much appreciated:
Canon 30D ?..can't justify the price of a 5D...yet Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS USM lens ?....but is very pricey and is about $1000 more for the IS compared to non IS...wondering if the IS is worth it. Any other lens combos to go with this setup?..wideangle etc.
or......go for similarily priced Nikon equip.
Upgrading finally from my beautiful 5 year old Sony DSC-F707 with that magic Carl Zeiss lens. Cheers and thanks Jack
[BnH] - 16 Nov 2006 12:35 GMT Buy it.
Don't hear from your Nikon nut friend is saying. I am a Nikon nut [D1X/H, D2H, S2 Pro] , but always envy the low noise 30D @ ISO 1600 can produce. + if you are bored, just buy some CZ 50 /1.4 T* or 85 / 1.5 T* + lens adapter and use it in your Canon :)

When people bang on about Canon not having in-camera anti shake, I remind them of Canon's ISO 1600 :)

The lens is pretty fast so I would think it is overkill....depends on what you want to shoot i guess.

HC - 17 Nov 2006 02:54 GMT G'day Jack
The 30D does it for me.....just love it for motor sport and general photos. For action photos I use 70-200 f4 L lens, my budget wouldn't extend to an f2.8 IS and besides I found it too heavy, although my son loves his f2.8 IS and prefers the heavier combo. Another favourite lens is a recent purchase of a vintage L lens, 20-35 f2.8 L circa 1989 and in immaculate condition.
Last month my 4yo DGD was 'taking photos' with her non-working P&S that resides in her toybox. I quickly grabbed my 30D with 20-35 f2.8L attached, selected full auto, hung it around her neck (while holding the strap where she couldn't see) and let her take some real photos. To my surprise, her results were 23 perfect photos out of 24 taken....the one out of focus was someone who moved towards the camera just as she had pressed the shutter, with no time for the camera to re-focus. Her composition was perfect, although I did crop the images only because of the wide lens being used. She was shaking from head to toe with excitement as she took these photos.....remember, these were 'the' first real photos she's ever taken, she was laughing so much I don't know how she held the camera and because it was a spur of the moment decision on my part, I didn't even change any settings (other than select Green Mode) from when I used it previously.
This proved to me that we all get too anal about taking the perfect shot....me included!! LOL

If you are doing motor sport, go on the hunt for a good SH 1DII and a Sigmonster.
If you don't have press credential, or the right friends you will be way back from the action, and you HAVE to have long FL and big f.

Jack - 21 Nov 2006 13:06 GMT Thanks Paul...was considering a second hand high-range Nikon but got cold feet worrying about how much it would have been banged around and if it would be back and forward to the service dept.

Man, 200 to 400 ISO is all you need for motorsports ...I would like to have 100 ISO with the D2H !
Rgds..........Chuck
Mr.T - 20 Nov 2006 06:06 GMT > Man, 200 to 400 ISO is all you need for motorsports ...I would like to > have 100 ISO with the D2H ! *IF* for example, a Canon had the same noise and other performance at 800 ISO as say a Nikon at 400 ISO, then the difference in cost and weight between buying and using an f4 lens instead of an f2.8 lens would certainly appeal to many people, other than yourself obviously.
Note I am not necessarily saying the above is the case, or that there aren't depth of field issues that may alter your choices, but in general, ANY increase in ISO performance for the same overall noise/resolution/color etc, is always a GOOD thing IMO. No way would I want a slower ISO unless it really meant better performance, easier just to use an ND filter when necessary.

Jack - 21 Nov 2006 13:20 GMT Thank you to all for your input...looks like I will go with the 30D and a 70-200 f2.8 USM (no IS...can use the difference in price for a 17-55mm lens or equiv. or macro) and throw in a Speedlite 430EX flash....oh, and maybe a 2x extender...I think I might just squeak all that into my budget. Cheers to all Jack

Jack,
Forget about 2 x convertors..Stick to 1.4 X , and you will be happy ..
Hope you enjoy the CANON....I will still out shoot you !

Jack - 21 Nov 2006 22:03 GMT I don't think so Chuck..your results with that clumsy D2H of late are quite unimpressive..

If you really must, or forget about converters altogether. (especially when mounted on a zoom!) Buy a proper longer lens if necessary (non zoom preferably) when you can afford it, and simply crop in photoshop until you can.

A 2X on a zoom is stretching it a bit. Many seem happy with a 1.4 on the 70-200 though. If you can, go for the 580EX. The word seems to favor it over the others.
