Was in a frantic panick this week to get some quick shots of a Great Egret
and in the rush of changing over CF cards I accidentally popped out my 1 gig
card from the camera before it had finished writing. Now it won't read or
format in the camera. Don't have a port on the PC for it yet, its on the way
though. Is there any way to salvage these disasters? Have a wrecked the
card? Any advice on what I can do?
cheers,

Once you have plugged directly into your pooter, run CardWiper over it.
This will take it back to it's most basic root level. From there pop it
back into your camera and reformat.
***WARNING***: ALL data (read "images") on the card will be lost. If
you want to salvage them, you will first need to use a recovery program like
PhotoRescue.
Both programs are available from here...

WHY!!!!! would you buy one off ebay at $9 (plus postage etc) when most
places have them for $10-$15 bucks

The usual reason is that they are located in the country, and would need to
pay postage in either case. But more often they are just addicted to ebay.

After considering spending money on phone calls and/or petrol to bother to
find one that I like for that price, why not.

Find "one that you like"??
If a card reader fits your cards (most cover nearly all formats these days)
and is not broken, why would you not like it I wonder?
My computer shop has 12 in 1's, with cable for $12 new. I'm betting the
postage and other fees was more than $3.
As for phone calls, what's wrong with using the internet as you do with
ebay?
But it's your choice, and good luck to you.

Get yourself a card reader ($20 or less) and use one of the numerous data recovery programs and you
should be able to recover all but what was been written at the time of ejection.

I recommend Sandisk Rescue Pro.
Works for even reformated cards :)

I agree - Sandisk Rescue pro is great - i have even used it on a portable
external disk that i inadvertantly deleted the files on (and emptied the
trash can!)
