Taken with my trusty HP R607 on the way home from my in-laws, I loved the
way the light fell on the round bales.

Love the shot.
Maybe straightening the horizon and moving in over the fence so that the
main focus is the bails without the distracting foreground.

thanks :-)
yeah well moving closer to the fence wasn't high on my priorities as this
was taken in summer and we had already seen a couple of snakes darting into
the long grass earlier that trip :-)

In defense of the OP, I don't think the picture is crooked. I think
there really is a gentle slope in the land. Either that or the power
pole is leaning over.
Moving in beyond the fence would remove the framing of the tree trunk
on the left and the branches on the top right. The picture then would
be quite plain and boring. The argument for removing all distractions
from photos just doesn't hold with landscapes. Natural framing
enhances the shot. The hay bales are quite obviously the subject;
pity the farmer laying them out didn't know someone would want to
photograph them and didn't lay them out in a pretty, geometric
pattern. :-)

I agree. I can detect a gentle motion blur as the bales roll slowly towards
the right.

I'm with Joan here: optical illusion maybe, but if it isn't a slope
then the power pole is crook. I'm in two minds if I'd
try and remove the fence by cropping or just leave it
there. When shooting, I'd also have tried making the
"framing" more intrusive: get the foreground shade
nearly hit the ruleof3rds boundary, get more of the
tree on the left and a little more of the foliage on top.
Nothing wrong with making the framing more obvious,
IMHO. BUt that would probably be out of what's
possible with that camera/lens? Anyways, looks
real nice and it's a good catch on the light.

I just arranged it on screen, to give the appearance of a 3:1 ratio crop
- ala ken duncan. cropped just below the lowest bale, cropped the tree
out, cropped out the power pole on the left, and cropped down at the
sky. I personally like that cropping very much.

Just tried your "recipe" as best I could. I agree. It can look
good without the distractions of trees, fence, and poles.
Cheers, Phred.

I will have to give it a try with the original and I will repost it, then a

Nice shot. As others have said, the darkness and busyness of the foreground
kind of distracts from the real feature of the shot - acres upon acres of
hay bales as far as the eye can see. Maybe even risking the snakes and
shuffling up to the fence might have made for a more enigmatic shot, but
it's pretty good all the same.
Oh and with reference to cameras and their limitations, I, for one, frankly
couldn't give a rat's. Assuming the basics are there, I think great images
are all about opportunity and timing. Maybe this or that's a bit soft, or
there weren't as many megapixels or bits-per-pixels as there could have been
with some other camera, but at the end of the day, content is king, *not*
gear.
