Bugger, you beat me to it. I knew that there was an announcement due
around now and have been trawling their web site periodically. (No, I
have no life, why do you ask? 8^> ) I just came across this:

http://www.canon.com.au/eos400d/default.aspx

Apparently the release date will be 8 September. Haven't found a price
yet.

LOLOL It helps to be on their press mailing list.

So another round of upgrades from all the manufacturers. This one will
make 30D sales interesting.

Cheers,

Wayne

Heh, good thinkin'...

Indeed; it looks like the only two advantages that the 30D has (from
what I've read so far) is the ability to go to a higher ISO (3200 vs
1600, on the rare occasions that you'd want to), and a considerably
higher burst rate (5 fps to a maxuimum of 30 vs 3 fps to a maximum of
27). 30D may therefore still be a better choice for some semi-pro
photojournalist types who need to capture action shots, but don't
really need the extra pixel count to produce larger output.

Still, my gut says that the 400D is targeted squarely at the pixel
count of the Nikon D200. If the 30D becomes collateral damage in the
process, then Canon can probably live with that. The price point is
going to be most interesting. Perhaps the 400D will sit a little
higher than the 30D (RRP $2300 but obviously can be had for less), and
be more comparable with the D200 (can be had for say $2,680, both body
only). If so, the 30D's price will probably drop to maintain price as
a primary difference from the 400D.

And if THAT happens, the 350D's price  will probably have to drop as
well. I can't see 30D becoming the new "entry level" camera. Or can I?

All wild-a.s speculation on my part, of course. Guess we'll know come
September...

The 400D is more like a slight upgrade to the 350D, not a reaplcement for
the 30D. The 30D still has the upper hand in functionality for those who
like the extra gadgets and a thumb wheel on the back (me). You've also got
to look at the body construction and general feel of the thing. Personally I
don't think I'd bother with it.

Rob Galbraith is listing the estimated street price at US$799 and US$899
with the 18-55 f3.5-5.6 II

also worth checking it's noise reduction system... the 30D does a dark
frame exposure.... the 350D did not.

I was using a 300D for awhile.. great noise performance...but it really
showed during a 40 minute exposure at night..... that alone would have
made it worth going the next step.... since I like taking night shots.

Actually, the 350D also has dark frame subtraction available.  I've
found very little practical difference with it on or off: if you pixel
peep you might notice 10 pixels that are slightly more green, but
that's about it. Here's an example:

Expose to the right! I've had two Canon bodies since my 300D (one of
them pro) and they can't compare when it comes to clean night shots.
It's a bugger that my 300D was stolen.

A single dark does not get you much. You really need to take
may and average them to aget good results. And you should also
use flats to correct gain errors...

That will make a mess of their 30D sales.

That's the same as the new Rebel XTi in the US, isn't it?
Annoying, the double-naming...

Thanks. What's with the "Rebel" name for the US?  Anyone
know the culture/history behind it?

Doesn't really look like an announcement to me, more a mild
acknowledgement that it's being developed for future models (like that
wouldn't be hard to guess :) ). The other 95% of that article is back
patting by Canon.

For some reason Canon want to identify the camera in a different way to
their other models, that use sensible (and the same in all markets)
numbering. I don't get it myself.

It's a marketing thing - there's some theory that Yanks like names whereas
Europeans are more comfortable with numbers. Look at cars - Mercs, Beamers &
Peugeots all use numbering schemes, whereas apart from the F-series trucks,
you'd be hard pressed to find a numbered US model. Australian-manufactured
cars tend to follow the names rather than numbers, yet we are relaxed and
comfortable with numbers for other things, including Cameras it seems.

I wonder if it is also about trying to discourage grey-marketing. Does
the 20D/30D series also have a product name? and the 5D? or is it only
the "Rebel" series?

My 13 year old daught will be in Japan in a few weeks must remember to tell
her not to ask for a KISS, mind you if she sees a K10D then Dad will be
happy if she brings one home. ;-)

grey marketing does have something to do with it. Though I heard the
Olympus stylus was called that and not the mju was because they had such
a problem with it.... not that many people did not in oz as well!

there is also an issue with luckynumbers etc.

Heehee, Misubishi call their 4x4 a Pajero, mind you with most Pajero drivers
the name fits.
