Both of these apparently can scan negatives (35mm, eg) but I've been unable
to find out if the software enables a positive end result. In other words,
can a B&W positive be produced from scanning a B&W negative - and can a
colour positive be produced from scanning a colour negative?
2ndly, any reccommendations on which of the 2 Canons is preferable for use
on the bazillion negs I have?
TIA

Yes and the 8400F is better according to the specs, I also plan on getting
one of these soon.

My older 5200F can scan both positive and negative, B&W and colour.
There are no options for colour tint with negatives, which can create
some interesting casts. The software may have improved in the past
couple of years to allow that.
Make sure you buy it from a retailer where you can return it if you are
not satisfied with the undoubtedly lower quality of a flatbed scanning
trannies!
